DeVries Wins Two Gold Balls in the 75s; Matthiessen Completes Doubles Gold Slam; Carter Takes 65 Singles Title

Dori deVries moved beautifully to beat Burnett Herrick 75 60 in the final of the 75s. The first set was close, but deVries broke Herrick to take the first set and the second set was quick. Carol Wood won the bronze. DeVries added a second gold to her total in doubles, combining with Dorothy Matthiessen to beat Wood and Herrick 62 61. Wood said that their opponents played great.

In the 65s, Brenda Carter was impressive from all parts of the court in dismantling Cathie Anderson 61 62. It was nice to see Sinclair Bill, who arrived in time to see her friend Cathie play the second set. Lee Delfausse beat Anne Russ 60 75 to place third.

In the 35s, Ivett Donoso and Kelly Pace are to meet in the singles final; the doubles final is between Mary Dailey (going for a gold slam in the 35s) and Erika Smith and Pace/Amy Alcini.

In the 45s, Judy Newman Rakela edged Metola in three sets 46 75 64, coming to net frequently throughout the match. She plays Shelly Works in the final. Shelly beat Tracy Houk 64 61, though the first set lasted long enough for two sets.

In the 45 doubles, Hollman/JJ Joseph beat Houk/Newman (that match featured some unbelievable points!) and Dailey/Smith beat the local favorites, Shelly Stillman-Scott/Kathleen Chassion.

In the 55s, I beat Mary Ginnard 62 61, but the score does not reflect the closeness of the match, particularly in the 2nd set. We had some tremendous rallies and long games. Tina Karwasky beat Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein 63 61.

In doubles, Tracy Viebrock and I beat Debbie Burgess/Donna Drosner 63 61. Tracy was all over the net, I only had to serve, return and watch her fly around. She played great! The doubles was late and there was music blasting for a while, tuning up for a later event, but once the main event began, the music was quieter, fortunately. We play Karwasky/Ginnard in the doubles final, they took out Jan Kirkland-Cochran and Chris RP 62 62.

The 85s finals are set, in singles Elaine Mason takes on Rita Price and Mason/Cathie Hall will play Price/Joyce Vanderpol in the doubles final.

The 65s final features Anderson/Delfausse vs Carter/Russ.

Today the tournament had turkey chili with bread and chips, wine and cheese for the players. The club and tournament director have really done a nice job supporting the tournament.
