Final Day at BallenIsles

I played Fran Chandler in the final and she outplayed me…64 64. She moved great as always! But it was a 2 hour plus match…in fact we were at 1/0 in the 2nd set when Kerry Young and Carol Clay took the court for the 60s final…and they finished when we were at 43 in the same set! That probably had more to do with our long games and Kerry’s flawless play though, Kerry was on fire all week in singles.

In the 60 doubles, the hyphenated team, Jan Kirkland-Cochran and Lil Peltz-Petow dropped the first set to Charleen Hillebrand (who won the 70 singles over Sheila Weinstock 3,0) and Trish Faulkner (TD for the upcoming world championships) then steamrolled them 62 61 in the final two sets.

The rest of the finals were played yesterday, though Trish Riddell beat Amy Gordon in the final RR 30s match to win the singles; Sarah Ansboury finished 2nd, having beaten Gordon on Friday and having lost to Riddell on Saturday.

The weather was the best of the week on Sunday, low 70s for a high and not too windy. Overall it was a really nice tournament.

This club is one of the sites of the individual world championships and also the site of the 55 women and I believe 40 men’s team championships in late April, so I’ll be back for those events when it will certainly be much hotter!

Next up, Crawford Cup Feb 5-9 in Fort Lauderdale, also on clay.
