Today the USA Althea Gibson Cup team had its first practice, at the Mirasol Country Club (thanks Jenny for getting the courts!). Despite having landed in Florida, and on the other side of the state (Punta Gorda), Betsy Kuhle made it to practice early, as did Pat Purcell and Tina Karwasky. We played for hours: doubles, some singles and drank lots of water in the Florida heat and humidity.

Next to us the 60s team brought in a ringer (Andi) when Jenny Klitch had to take a work call and had a terrific match.

Our team rep Michael dropped by the courts and gave us our player to player, captain and individual gifts
In the evening I hosted a dinner for all of the USA women’s players (and one South African, Jenny Cerff) and friends. We had a fun time and celebrated Vicki Buholz’s 64th birthday a day in advance with cake, balloons, song (traditional happy birthday and South African Kiddies happy birthday which involves dancing in circles) and a candle.

Tomorrow we have a morning practice at our Cup venue and in the afternoon I have a captains’ meeting, followed by the opening ceremonies.
