Forest Hills, Thursday Update

Yukie Koizumi was a double winner in Forest Hills, and barely broke a sweat in the process. For Mary Johnson it was a bittersweet day…she reached the singles and doubles finals, but met up with Koizumi in each and came away with 2 silver balls. Koizumi/Trisha Judge beat Johnson/Lackey 63 61 while in the singls final Yukie lost only a game.

The 50s was marred by an injury to Mary Ginnard which occurred in the singles semis…trailing a set and 21 to Susan Wright she retired with an injury and also defaulted from the doubles final with Tina Karwasky (Wright is 3/4 of the way to a doubles slam now), and also the 3/4 playoff against Karwasky (who lost to Kathy Fritz in 2 sets today). Wright plays her doubles partner Kathy May Fritz in the singles final.

The 60s singles final is set with Betty Wachob taking on Brenda Carter. Wachob beat Suella Steel and Carter beat Judy Louie.

The 70s singles: the top 4 seeds are in the semis, with Matthiessen vs Langer and Herrick (who played well to beat Roz King in the quarters) taking on Dori deVries. DeVries had a great day, combining with Belmar Gunderson to hand Dorothy Matthiessen her first doubles loss in the 70s. Dororthy/Burnett fell in three sets to deVries/Gunderson. They take on unseeded King/Nancy Reed who continued their fine play with a 3 set win over Carol Wood/Dorothy Wasser.

In the 80s, upsets were the order of the day, with Rita Price beating Betty Eisenstein and Hoffman beating Irene Shepard, both in the semis.

The weather has moderated some since early in the week…play continues tomorrow.
