George McCabe, Roz King & Muffie Grieve Win World Singles Titles in Orlando

Today, October 19 was a great day for tennis at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Muffie Grieve beat fellow Canadian Rosie Asch in the women’s 85 final. George McCabe won the men’s 85 title over Max Byrne (note corrected surname!)from AUS. He said it was his fourth final and first win. He’s in the doubles final tomorrow too. In an All American final, Roz King beat her friend and doubles partner, Dori DeVries to capture her second world title with a 64 64 win. They also reached the doubles semifinal (not final..that will take place Friday) where they fell to Canadian Inge Weber and Dorothy Wasser from Florida (those lobs…deadly!).

It was very windy and the players struggled in the wind, especially the smaller players.

in men’s 80s it will be an All American final as were the semis. King Van Nostrand easily moved past Gordon Hammes, but #2 seed Lester Sack dropped the first set to unseeded Herm Ahlers before prevailing in a match tiebreak.

Both women’s 65 matches were terrific. Nora Blom, NED, rallied from a set down to beat Adrienne Avis AUS. Kerry Ballard, AUS had a set point in the second set against Jana Sedlacova from CZE but failed to convert and fell 75 76. Blom is seeking her second straight world title.

Bruno Renoult beat Larry Turville, moving brilliantly and slicing and dicing his much taller opponent.

Peter Keller, AUS advanced to the men’s 75 singles final, taking out Flor, ESP.

IN men’s 70s, Camina Borda advanced when Ken Dahl retired with a bad leg.

In women’s 70s, Sylvie Galfard (who took out Brenda Carter) will play Elle Krocke NED (I think).

In women’s 75, the final between doubles partners Donna Fales and Heide Orth, both former tour players will take place tomorrow.

There were lots of doubles results too…more in a day or two with photos!
