So there’s now no play till 4:30 pm, but there was quite a bit of play before the rain this morning.

In the 65s, Adrienne Avis (Main) upset Tina Karwasky in two tight sets 76(5) 64. Adrienne moved well, dropshotted well and volleyed well. Jana Sedlackova, CZE  beat Nichole Hesse Cazaux in straight sets 60 63. Nora Blom (NED), defending champion,  beat Helen Worland (AUS) 61 76(6)and #2 seed Kerry Ballard beat Judy Dixon, USA 61 60 to complete the final 4.

In the women’s 70s, Elle Krocke, the top seed from Netherlands, edged Frances Maclennan (GBR) in three sets. Maclennan got going after losing the first 8 games, and commented that Krocke was flawless up till then. Mary Ann Gaskin, CAN was in a battle with June Peck, GBR which June won 76 (9) 63. The remaining matches are unfinished in this division. Brenda Carter (USA)  is down a set but up 2/0 40/0 against Sylive Galfard-Kirsetn (FRA).  Petro Kruger (RSA) is playing Carol Gay (USA).

In the women’s 75, Donna Fales is up 64 42 against Brigitte Godfroid (FRA). Heide Orth (GER) the top seed, beat Charleen HIllerbrand 62 63.

In the 80s it will be an All-American final since Dori DeVries (USA) took out Inge Weber (CAN), the defending world champion 46 64 (10-2). It was the second win this year for DeVries over Weber. DeVries will play her doubles partner, Roz King (USA) for the world singles title. King beat Carol Wood (USA) 61 36 (10-5) to advance in a drop shot filled semifinal.

For the 85s, it will be another North American final, but for that division it’s an all-Canadian final between Doris Hart Cup teammates Muffie Grieve and Rosie Asch. Grieve beat Margaret Canby (USA) 61 62 while Asch (the defending champion)  took out #2 seeded Yvette Laubus (FRA) 60 60.

In men’s play George McCabe, the #3 seed, took out Henri Cruchet (FRA), 64 26 (10-2). He will play Max Byrne (AUS) the #4 seed. Byrne upset top seeded John Powless (USA) 64 36 (10-7).

In the men’s 80s, Herm Ahlers (USA) is playing the last men’s QF against Andreas Seeholzer (GER) and leads by a set and 3-1. Gordon Hammes (USA) upset  Herbert Althaus (GER), the #3 seed 62 75. King Van Nostrand the top seed and defending champion beat Kevin Crump (AUS) 60 61. Lester Sack (USA) beat Silvio Linzbauer 5-0 ret.

In the men’s 75, Jaime Pinto Bravo (CHI) beat Ernst-Gunter Ehmke 60 60. Henk Nijeboer (GBR) allowed Fred Driling (USA) only a game. Eltjo Sasker (NED) beat Henry Steinglass (USA) 61 61. Steven Lunsford (USA) though did score a win for the host country, beating Bob Howes (AUS) the #3 seed 64 63.

In men’s 70s, Ken Dahl (CAN) took out Jamie Pressly (USA) 76(5) 64. Jorge Camina Borda (ESP) the top seed, beat Richard Tutt (GBR) 62 61. There are 2 uncompleted matches, Peter Keller (AUS) vs Steve Gottlieb (USA) and Luis Flor de la Morena (ESP) vs Ramior Benavides Saravia (BOL) the #2 seed.

In men’s 65, Andrew Rae (AUS), the #2 seed,  won by default over Alain Vaysset (FRA). Torsetn Hansson (SWE) beat Tom Smith (USA) 46 51 ret. Padg Bolton (USA)  is playing Bruno Renoult (FRA). Larry Turville (USA) is taking on VIttorio Costella (ITA).

The singles should be completed tonight if there’s no further rain (no guarantees, check with the tournament). The sun is out now!
