Sunday was a successful tennis day but a tough one. We play #2 and #4 singles first, followed by #1 and #3 singles as the previous matches finish. We played TC Singen in the final and it was a tough tie. We lost at #2 singles (the woman Carole DeBruin played was an incredible mover, Regina, with a good variety of shots..killer forehand drop shot, two and one-handed backhands, and she could hit topspin, slice and flat). Karien Theeuwes won at #4 singles quite easily, as did Luisa (Nini) Gouveia at #3. I played Sandra Hopfner from Switzerland, and she was very tough…lovely one-handed topspin backhand with heavy topspin, as well as a slice, a great forehand which she could do a lot of things with, short angles, high deep angles with massive spin, and inside out. She has a nice kick serve and a flat serve to the T. Fortunately for me, she also made a lot of errors. I edged her 36 64 11-9 in the match tiebreaker. I am not sure I’ve ever played at MTB in singles…and the tiebreaker was a traditional one where we changed ends every 6 points instead of a Coman or ITF Tiebreaker. I was down 3/0 early, up 9/7 late (she hit both both & side lines on the 9-8 point) before a couple of errors followed and I won the match to put us up 3/1 and into the driver’s seat. Carole and Nini won #2 doubles convincingly to clinch the win. Karien and I were still on court but finished the match (we lost…Karien played great…I did not, Regina played really well, and Sandra was solid).

After photos and certificate and trophy presentations, Nini, Reinhilde and I took an Uber to our hotels near the main train station in Nuremberg, Carole drove back to Netherlands as did Karien & Hunny, Dagmar drove north and Sabine, Peter and Iris (our wonderful driver, photographer and supporters) drove to Essen. There was unfortunately a huge accident on the highway which closed the road for hours. Dagy managed to get ahead of it (or perhaps was going on a different road), but Sabine, Peter and Iris arrived home at 3:37 (should have been about a 6 hour drive arriving around 10-11pm and Karien and Hunny arrived at 6am!

Now I am on the train to Munich (6:30am departure), changing once at Munich for the train to Villach. Reinhilde and Nini are on the same train but in a different car.

By dawns early light…

I play tomorrow at 11:30 in my next tournament in Villach but am meeting Vicki Buholz in Villach this afternoon for a practice. I play my doubles partner from last year first match.

Draws for Villach are here.

    • Thanks…also I am trying to find out where to apply for the Cup teams…no link I could find but I emailed the USTA twice so far…it’s a new website and it takes time I suppose to get the kinks out.
