Today is a quick one, I have an 8:30am match and 7:30 warm up with Susan and we had an NSWTA meeting which lasted till after 6…not late but it was 7 before I got back to the hotel.
I won my match against Janet Mosely 62 60. She played well in spurts and I was steady and moved well to move into the quarters. I play Leslie Murveit, the 5th seed. She played Graciela Donoso from Argentina, a nice player and won by the unusual score of 46 60 61. I only saw the latter two sets so have no idea how she lost the first set.
Susan and I won our doubles over Lisa from Houston and Chris Witherspoon from Virginia 63 60. We played pretty well and had some good points but had more firepower (Susan) and were more consistent.
There were a number of upsets today in the 55s and 75s. Ria Graham, a finalist last year here upset #3 seeded Dorothy Matthiessen. Former USTA president Julia Levering beat Carol Wood in straight sets. In the 55s, Erin Boynton, seeded 4, of Canada, lost to Alcira of Argentina 64 46 76 (5). She plays Kim Zebot next. Sally Smith beat Sue Bramlette, the tournament director extraordinaire, also in three sets.
in the 65s, Carolann Castell edged Janet Watanabe in a long 3-setter. Rosi Fortna took out Wilma Lee 65 ret. The top 8 seeds advanced.
More tomorrow…
