Today was semifinal day in Plantation, Florida for the 55s and 65s.
Our team, the SoCal 65s, seeded 2nd, advanced 5/0 over Eastern. It was breezy when we started and windy when I finished, which was last among the three singles players. I beat Carol Levine…lots of long and tough points but I won 61 61. Tina Karwasky won 60 62 (and was up 5/0 in the second) at #2 against Sally Zasloff and Una Davis beat Lisa Jett 60 61.
We started at 8:30 and the doubles began around noon. Colleen Ferrell and Betsy Kuhle won in a topsy-turvy manner (iphone autocorrected “topsy” to “tipsy”..make of that what you wish), 63 5-7 (after leading 5-2), 6-0….never in doubt, but Zasloff and Carrie Rabuse from Eastern were tough…lots of lobs and great hands and angles. Fun watch. Kandy Chain and Karen Haas were just tough at #2 doubles, winning 0, 2 against Deborah Larkin/Elaine Heekin…Karen is fast and Kandy is in the right spot.

In the final we play a tough Southern team (10 states vs 1/2 of a state)…and they play a tough SoCal team.
The 55s SoCal team had a tough match against Mid-Atlantic. Kathy Settles was quick at #1 singles vs Andrea Rice (63 62), though the points were strenuous. Kathy Archibald had a heartbreaker at #2, falling 75 in the third (to Delphine Owen) and Kim Kinberg lost to Kirsten Elim who was very tough (I watched a lot of that..Elim is fast and athletic). Elim/Julie Osborne clinched the tie for Mid Atlantic with a 75 61 win over Kinberg/Archibald. Jen Beindorf/Settles had earlier leveled the match at 2/2 vs Rice/Leslie Butterworth.
SoCal will play NorCal in an intrastate rivalry tomorrow…NorCal narrowly lost to Texas 3/2 and has a tough team too.
I caught up with Chris Ramsower Pearlstein who is feeling much better (heart rate is down to normal), and Mary Mottola…(torn hamstring is going nowhere soon), Carol Wood and many other players.

And then there was this spectator:

Great recap on tennis at Intersectionals Carolyn. Thanks for all you did as part of our team. So happy you won singles and doubles with Una. Sorry we didn’t come through for the gold.
It was a team effort…we came close, can’t win them all!
