Into the Semis in Font de sa Cala

Draws/Results

I had early matches today: 9am for singles and noon for doubles. I warmed up a bit t 8am with Chris and Paul French, then served on an adjacent open court which was great. The weather was dicey in the morning…it was raining when I walked over to the warm up courts and sprinkling as we were warming up even though the sun was in our eyes (yes, there was a rainbow, albeit a faint one). But the courts took the rain and by the time the matches started, the courts were quite dry.

I played Sue Winters from Gr Britain…we played once before but it was over eight years ago. She’s a scrappy player who gets a lot of balls back, moves pretty well and is thinking on court. She held off a couple of match points in the second set to grab a second game but I won 0,2. One British player asked how I got so much power on my shots…that’s a new one for me!

I watched a bit of other matches…Laura De Vittori lost to Andrea Schmitz who played a good match…Laura did fend off a match point in the second set (after coming back from 2-5 down) to force a third but Andrea, a tall German with a smooth baseline game, won the third 62. I watched a few points of my next opponent playing, but the viewing wasn’t great, so I left to get dry clothes and to get ready for doubles.

Danny Waldman dropped a couple of games to Andrew Stanley but advanced to the quarters…not many Americans here. Ann & Andrew Stanley are playing mixed this afternoon.

We won’t play doubles tomorrow…our opponents didn’t play today, but we’ll find out later if we play singles tomorrow…

The weather did end up being quite nice after the thunder & lightning storms in the morning and the rain.

Laura De Vittori and Helge Albrecht (30 year tournament director) below.
