Singles Final Thursday & Doubles Semis

Draws/results are here.

I had an interesting warm up today in Mallorca. There was a sign up sheet for practice courts at the Na Taconara tennis facility just up the road from the Beach Club Font de sa Cala, so I booked a 9am court there. I picked up Patricia Zerdan in Cala Rajada and we arrived on time (despite schools closing several roads around 9am). The person manning the tournament desk at Na Taconara immediately told me there were no practice courts (keep in mind that every slot on the practice sign up sheet till around 3pm was filled).

We left (hard to argue in German for us…I should have taken a photo of the practice sheet which I normally do) and went to Tennis Aguait around 7 minutes away, and were able to book a court (for a fee of course). The court was in rather rough condition, since the lines were raised too much, especially on my end. It was fine for warming up and cross courts and even serves and returns…but then we started a brief rally and I forgot about the line…tripped on it and ended up flat on my face…I literally “took it on the chin”. I think I scared Patricia half to death but it was one of my best landings (my chin is still a bit sore though!). I had a sore chin/mouth for a while, iced it when I got home and took a couple Advils and was fine…not even a scratch.

I played my singles at 1:30 against Reinhilde Adams, one of my German Club teammates. I played well and didn’t make too many errors, in winning 60 60. I play Pauline Fisher who has dropped only two games en route to the singles final (and about the same in doubles). We play at 10:30 tomorrow…and I’m warming up tomorrow at the Beach Club! Pauline beat another of my German Club teammates today, Dagy Sperneder.

We had an off day in doubles but play tomorrow at 3pm against Andrea Schmidt and Dr Ulrike, from Germany. They beat the top seeds in the first round.

Below are the W70 doubles finalists (who face Pauline and Shirley Fox tomorrow); the player on the right was my second round singles opponent too.

Dan Waldman continues to roll in Men’s 70s, beating Alan Rasmussen today; Max King/Everett Darnielle are in the 65 doubles final (Darnielle beat the 9th seed in 65 singles before losing to the 5th seed); Danny Shaw is in the men’s 70s doubles final with Keith Porter (CAN). They beat the #2 seeds, Alan Rasmussen/Frits Raijmakers by walkover…(Frits was playing singles against an injured Martin Cornish (pulled a muscle in Feld am See) and pulled his calf running for.a short ball…just before Cornish was possibly going to pull the ripcord. Such is tennis.); Ann Stanley (USA)/Andrew Stanley (GBR) are in the 70 mixed final tomorrow. Addendum: Bruce Barrett is in the 75s doubles final. I think that’s about it for Americans still playing in Font de sa Cala this week.
