I had a welcome day off from tennis after a hard, hot week of tennis, but followed the action and actually watched a bit of the mixed doubles upset of the #1 seeds in the 70s. It was another scorchingly hot day in South Florida with temperatures in the 90s (around 34 Celsius) and a “feel like” temperature over 100…close to 40 Celsius.
Betsy Savitt/John Jaklitsch upset top seeded Jasper Cooper/Pauline Fisher in 70 mixed doubles 63 75, and Pat Purcell/Kurt Chan upset the #2 seeds, Jan Worthington Vick/Ross Orford 75 61 (only to face another tough American team, Bunnie Jackson/John Embree in the quarters).
In 65 mixed, Chuck Kuhle/Anne Frautschi upset the #2 seeds, Chris/Paul French (Paul was the defending champion) 10-7 in the match tiebreak.
There were a few other minor upsets but the big guns start play tomorrow. Susan Wright, the top seed, plays Leanne Swaysland in the W65; Terri Thyssen, the USA W65 Indoor champion takes on Erin Boynton of Canada (5th seed) and Lori Robertson, finalist at the 65 Indoors, takes on Michelle Hill of Australia, the 6th seed; Gillian Brook, GBR and the 3rd seed faces Wanda Howes of Australia…all at Mirasol and all should be good matches.
The top seeds don’t play tomorrow in the W 70s or W 60s.
I don’t know the men’s players as well…James Pressley vs the 4th seed in M70s might be interesting…and there look like other tough matches to come in all men’s 128 draws with few byes.
Is there a live feed for ITF World Masters Individual Championship matches?
I’ll try to find out I think the link would be the same
