My team is the Althea Gibson Cup team (W70). We arrived early at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center and went to our warm up court, listed on the ITF Masters Tournament Software site as Court 3. We put up the USA flag with carabiners and Zip ties; we warmed up till 9am, as the court was empty and then…were bumped by a lesson. Somehow wires were crossed and the ITF had courts 5-20 instead of 2-8 and 11-20. So we took down the flag, moved it to court 9, had a bit more warm up, then ceded the court to the Argentines.
Tina was first up against the #2 from Argentina Marcia Welbers, who looked so very young for 70, and was not a bad player. I thought from looking at their records that she was their true #1. Tina won 60 61, only ceding a game when 60 50 up. Her return of serve was deadly. I was up next against Marta Delgano and won 60 60. Pat Purcell and Betsy Kuhle played a flawless doubles match to finish out the win 60 60 against Nelba Martin and Alicia Carazzone de Pocell. Betsy set up Pat who was on fire with her putaways. In fact, the #1 singles match between Pauline Fisher (#3 ITF W70), GBR and Carmen Chillida, ESP was going on when Pat and Betsy began to warm up and the score was 2/0 in the 2nd set…Pat and Betsy were up 3/0 before the 2/0 game finished! Pauline did win 63 in the third but dropped that 2/0 game and the second set.

The Men’s 65s beat Netherlands 3/0 with Mark Vines winning at #2 and Bill Moss at #1 singles; Neil Levinson/John Valastro (Atlanta, GA, first Cup!) won the doubles point.

The Men’s 70s beat Sweden 3/0; Dave Sivertson played #2 singles and I think (but not sure) that Danny Waldman played #1 and Chris Bennett/Joe Rasgado played the doubles but I only saw a bit of #2 singles.

The Women’s 65s, playing at the Mirasol CC beat Argentina. Susan Wright beat Maria Cecilia Rey Salvia 62 62 at #2 singles and Ros Nideffer beat Alicia Sisca 60 61. Anne Frautschi and Shannon Carney are playing the doubles.

The Women’s 60s, playing at BallenIsles, beat Sweden in both singles: Vicki Buholz beat the Swedish #4 Sofi Hakanson 60 61 and Jenny Klitch beat the Swedish #3 Sofi Rehme 60 60. Jenny Rens/Buholz fell to the Swedish #1 & 2: Stina Mosvold and Lotta Ekberg 2-6 60 8-10.

The Men’s 60s beat Turkey 3/0: Andy Stoner won at #2 singles; John Saviano won at #1 and Ross Hessler/Steve Schultz won the doubles.
