Julie Thu from Texas completed a successful singles campaign in Tokyo at the ITF Masters World Championships, winning five singles matches at #1 during the team event and six matches in the individual world championships to win her first ITF Individual World Championship (in her first try). She did not drop a set in 11 matches in Tokyo. In the final she beat her Margaret Court Cup teammate, Hiromi Sasano of San Diego 64 64. Thu also won a bronze medal with San Francisco’s Francesca La O.

Sasano also won an individual gold medal, combining with fellow San Diegan Trent Miller to win the 45 mixed doubles. They had to go to match tiebreakers to win the semis and finals, both over all-Dutch teams. They beat Caroline DeVries/Dennis Banks in the final. (Interestingly, other than Miller/Sasano the semifinalists were all-Dutch teams.

Miller combined with Rodolfo (Rudy) Rodriguez of San Diego to win the men’s 45 doubles final over the Portuguese pair of Nuno Matias/Antonio Moira.

Congratulations to all the medalists in Tokyo.
