Day II in La Jolla…a May Gray day which found the sun nonexistant, but the courts kept warm with all the feet running around them all day.
In the women’s 50s there was one mild upset, Patricia Sisson edged Debbie Burgess. Kandy Chain was taken to the limit agains Mary Alice Hillier, winning 76 in the third.
In the 60s, Wende Walter gave Char Hillebrand a workout before falling 75 62; and Uta Hegberg beat Anne Russ in a tough but straight-set battle.
In the 70s, the closest anyone came to an upset was the traffic vs Dorothy Matthiessen, who worked up more of sweat driving down to La Jolla (since she barely made it in time) than on the court as her opponent was forced to retire mid-match with an injury. The other seeds also won.
There are doubles now on court and many tough matchups tomorrow as most 50s matches involve 2 seeds playing each other.
