La Jolla Monday

The USTA National 50-90 Hard Courts began today in La Jolla, California. “May Gray” is in full effect…low foggy conditions, and cool, but dry and perfect playing conditions, no sun, a little wind.

It was a calm start to the tournament, no upsets, other than the fact that Sheila Belinsky Weinstock, the 8th seed, pulled out of the 50 singles due to injury, leaving Tracy Houk with a pass into the quarters.

I played doubles today, with Kathy Vick from Lubbock, TX. She was left without a partner when her partner injured herself and my partner is recovering from pneumonia, so we were able to team up, and won our first round today. We play a San Diego team tomorrow, Susan Dent and Miki Shintani, who won their match 76 in the third today.

Tomorrow I play a good Canadian player, Cora Wills, who has played on the Canadian Maria Bueno Cup team several times. It will be a challenge.

Most of the seeds are in action tomorrow, in singles and doubles, should be some good tennis!

There is also a local men’s tournament going on.
