Lugano Singles Champion; Midnight Madness Doubles

Draws are here.

I played Carola Kluzer of Italy in the singles final and played very well…though she was not at her best, and won the 65 singles title. We had a small awards ceremony after.

Serge Gresy beat Bruno Renoult to win the 75 men’s final which was played just before our noon time match.

Below are the people working the desk…they put in long hours during the tournament.

Then it was a loooong wait for our doubles match. I did some shoulder exercises and lunch, then walked along Lake Lugano and into the old town. I went into the big department store there and into the basement, which was a gourmet grocery store…(I still like Coop better for most things though). It had a large and excellent chocolate collection and I did not go away empty handed! the lakefront in Lugano has wonderful views. They were just starting to set up booths for the evening festivities which included music and more in the park. And a LOT of young people partying on a Thursday night.

Our doubles started after 10pm and finished just after midnight, 1:45. We played in the 55, against Scola/Nyfelt and won 75 63. There was music blaring from the nearby festivities and the smell of marijuana in the air. Leanne Swaysland was amazing. I couldn’t see well to volley though overheads were ok for some reason. But Leanne volleyed beautifully and finished off most of the points. Leanne (who won her 6pm singles earlier in the evening), then had to play mixed, the last match of the evening…or rather the first match of Friday morning, with Manny Radic and they won 62 62. I left when they were up 3/2, at it was already past 1am. Fortunately Lugano feels safe walking around at that time.

Leanne plays singles now, noon, which is the final, and mixed not before 7:30 tonight, which will be a relatively early night.

  1. Great photo with lake behind you. Very funny about pot smoke and music blaring and you could not see your volleys… I had similar experience watching the Endless Summer Movie in the 60’s but without Volleys…

    • Thanks Bill. I ran into Brendan Murphy in Barcelona who said he practiced a lot with you during the pandemic…I guess now he lives in Florida.
