Mary Dinneen followed up her impressive win over World Champion Julie Cass with straight set wins over Rebecca Stapp and defending champion Vesna McKenna to win the 2010 Women’s 40 Clay Courts. According to tournament referee Scott Harrison, “She’s really good. Doug Booth, CEO of USTA-FL said she was #1 in Florida in the 12, 14 and 16s and played #1 for Rollins…” Stapp won the bronze over Sue de Lara.
In 40 doubles, Julie Cass won her third national 40s title of the year, with Vesna McKenna, with whom she won the world championships earlier this year. She’ll be going for a “gold slam” in 40 doubles at the hard courts in December in La Jolla, CA. They beat Diane Fishburne/Annemarie Brigandi in the final.
In contrast to the 40s, the 50 singles went according to form. Diane Fishburne, also the reigning world champion, and defending champion, beat Susan Wright, who was going for her 4th 50s singles title in a row. Wright has not yet won a clay court national, but has improved steadily on the surface. Fishburne beat Wright 63 61. Kathy Vick placed third.
The 50 doubles did feature an upset. The last minute pairing of Frances O’Sullivan (who is returning to tournament play after a few years off) and Kathy Vick, won the clay courts over Susan Wright/Tracy Worley Hagen 64 66 2-2 Ret injury.
