Dorothy Matthiessen didn’t drop a game today in the women’s 80 semis. Burnett Herrick, the top seed, had to work for her singles win, beating last year’s champion, Mary John Lynch 64 64 on court one. Weather permitting (the 100% chance of rain doesn’t sound promising), Burnette and Dorothy will play the singles final tomorrow. The women’s 80 doubles is a round robin; top seeded Herrick/Judith Smith play #2 seeds, Lynch/Rose Austin, tomorrow in the 3rd round of the five day round robin event.
In women’s 70s, Sheila Weinstock was the only seed pushed very hard, first in singles against Ann Loose, where she survived via an 11-9 tiebreak win in the first set and then took the second 75. Later in the day she partnered with Ann Moore and cme up short, losing in three sets against Elizabeth Barnhill/Sharon Ploor (I think…the score today showed Barnhill/Ploor winning; yesterday it didn’t.) All other seeds in singles and doubles advanced without a lot of drama.
In the women’s 60s, top seeded and three-time defending champion Tina Karwasky reached the quarters without hitting a ball when her opponent defaulted. No other seeds lost more than five games in singles and in doubles the closest match was Karwasky/Jan Kirkland-Cochran’s win over the tough team of Lil Peltz-Petow/Norma Taylor 62 63. Matches tomorrow should get interesting as all main draw matches are seed vs seed.
