McEvoy, DeVries and Lutz Win Big at Indoors in Kansas

Vicky McEvoy, Doris deVries and Jane Lutz may not have red shoes, but all three found their way back to Kansas and took home two gold balls there this week.

McEvoy beat her doubles partner, Molly Hahn in the final after Hahn took out top seeded Brenda Carter in a three set battle. Carter took the bronze over Wilma Lee.

McEvoy and Hahn then combined to beat the top seeded pair of Carter/Cindy Babb in three sets for the gold. Lois Harris/Sheila Johnson took bronze after a long battle with Carmen Almodovar and Barbara Hubbard, winning 75 in the third.

In the 75s, Dori deVries beat her doubles partner in the final (sensing a theme here?), taking out Roz King 75 in the third. Lyn Tietz bounced Grace Woo for bronze. CORRECTION: Grace Woo won the bronze over Tietz. deVries King then joined forces to win the gold over Tietz/Norma Veal. The top seeds didn’t lose a set en route to the title. In the 3/4 playoff, Judy Janc combined with Ruth Nutt to win her first ever USTA ball. Congratulations Judy. (Thank you Roz King for submitting the photos.

Perennial gold slammer Jane Lutz showed no signs of slowing down, taking both the 85 singles and doubles title (with Rita Price). Rita had to default in the singles final with what she termed a “pain in the butt” but was able to complete the doubles win. Louise Russ took the bronze in singles. Lutz/Price beat Russ/Angie Ray in the doubles final. Carol Cofer/Janet Hubbard took the bronze.
