Men’s 75-90 Hard Courts

The 75, 85 & 90s are proceeding mostly or somewhat to form at the Men’s 75-90 Hard Courts at the Morgan Run Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, CA….the 80s, not so much.

The 90s had a draw of 16, partly due to the draw of players who had participated in the Lurie Cup the weekend prior to the tournament. The Lurie Cup is an international team event between the USA and players from other countries with a 5 singles/4 doubles format. However, the final of the 90s is between two Americans, Bob Sherman, who won the indoors last week, and Alex Swetka, who has dominated the 90s for a few years. Swetka/Sherman are also in the doubles final against Ells/Hernamann, who reached the final with a default in the semis.

In the 85s, Graydon Nichols (Dad) dropped a game in reaching the final, against the #4 seed Francis Jones,  and faces unseeded Edwin Tyler, who beat #2 seed Edward Selfe in the quarters and unseeded James Watters in the semis. Nichols/Mackey play Druliner/Tyler, upset winners over the #2 seeds, Anderson/Sellery.

The 75s had a big draw and are out only to the quarters. The top 4 seeds are all in action tomorrow: Neil Hurlbut, Buddy Lomax, George McCabe and Dennis Nielsen.

In the 75 doubles, the top 4 seeds are in the semis, with Doss/Powless and Lindborg/Jim Nelson winners in straight sets. They join McCabe/Chuck Nelson and Hurlbut/Nielsen in the semis.

The 80s: The top seed, Tanman, went out to Richard Olson in the first round; Olson won today and is in the semis. John Bradshaw, the winner last week at the indoors, but unseeded at Morgan Run, edged his way past #3 seed Chuck DeVoe 75 in the third. Ron Boone took out #5 Harvey Zorbaugh in three sets and Mel Lewis took out Richard Eitel in the round of 32; Left amongst the seeds are Bill Davis, Russell Seymour, Bill Davis and Gerry Thomas.

In the 80 doubles, the only seeds left are Bunge/Hippenstiel, who trailed by a set when their opponents retired with a leg injury. The 80s are quite an unpredictable group this year. DeVoe/Davis were upset by Olson/Lewis in straight sets. Fitzgerald/Foran beat the top seeds, Tanman/Fink 60 60 today.
