Day 3 at Merion saw 1 upset in the 35’s and several in the 55 singles. The doubles went according to form to the semis, no upsets at all.
Michelle King beat the 2004 finalist in the 35 singles, Marianna Hollman, in straight sets. She takes on Hy Yorke the #1 seed in the semis, while her doubles partner, Julie Cass will face Julie Kaczmarek.
In the 45’s, the top 4 seeds eased into the semis without the loss of a set. Wright plays Karwasky and Koizumi plays Preissing.
In the 55’s, Ching Ling Chang continued her fine play, edging Judy Louie in 3 sets. Mary Wilson also continued her stellar grass court run, beating Heide Orth, the defending finalist, in 3 sets, for her 2nd win over Orth in as many weeks. She next takes on Barb Mueller, who dismissed #4 seeded Marlie Buehler, a former finalist at Merion, 62 62. Ann Guerrant, playing her first Cat I national of the year, has cruised to the singles final…she faces Ching Ling Chang, also from Arizona in the other semi.
