Nideffer, Karwasky & Carter Nab Singles Titles at National Hard Courts Saturday

Ros Nideffer beat Natalie Hereman Bagby in three sets today to win the 50 Hard Courts. Ros dropped the first set, and went up a break in the second before Natalie broke back to level the set at 4-4. That was her last hurrah though…she was to win only one more game in the 36 64 61 match. It was Ros’ 3rd straight title in 50 singles in La Jolla and fourth overall. Judy Newman beat Anna Zimmermann for the bronze.

Tina Karwasky played a very good match and beat me 63 64. The hard courts suit her game and movement much better than clay does. I was disappointed not to play better though Tina had a lot to do with that. Back to the practice court which is why this game is so intriguing…at any age improvement vis a vis one’s peers is possible. Leslie Airola Murveit took the bronze with a 62 63 win over Sherri Bronson.

Brenda Carter continued her domination in the 70s. She’s yet to lose a set in singles. She beat up on her doubles partner, Betty Wachob, winning 60 61. Betty did a great job to get there, winning back to back 3-setters. Cathie Anderson took bronze over Charleen Hillebrand.

Carter/Wachob also won the doubles, beating Anderson/Carolann Castell 62 64.

The consolation and the men’s matches continue tomorrow at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. But for me, the tournament is finished, time for a few days off before getting back on the practice court.
