Oldsmar, Spring Grandes Dames, Thursday

Brrrrrrr….that’s the weather in Oldsmar, near Tampa, this week…50s during the day, 30s and 40s at night..this is Florida???? (61 tomorrow).

Despite the weather, the tournament was in full swing today, for singles anyway. The quarters were held in most divisions. There was one upset, in the 50s. Wendy McColsky of NC, a consistent and very quick counterpuncher with dancing feet edged Susie Brown 64 75….Susie attacked continuously and McColsky countered well, dipping passing shots at Susie’s feet and lobbing well all day long.

Ellen Goodman and Toni Novack battled for hours, with Novakc finally surviving when Goodman retired with cramps at 4-4 in the third set. She faces Kerry Young next while Carol Clay and Brenda Carter play for the 20th time in 2 years (really only about the 5th time…but it seems like they play every tournament).

Ria Graham and Caroline Haynes advanced in the 70s, but Phyllis Westerman gave Graham a good battle in the quarters, with Graham winning 64 63.

Semis tomorrow and doubles quarters…busy day.
