Quarterfinal Day at the La Jolla 50-90 Hard Courts

Upsets are few and far between at the Hard Courts with the only unseeded players advancing over seeds doing so by default.

Today I played Yoko Anderson who received a default from the 7th seed, Chieko Holt, yesterday. I won today 60 60, but we had some good points. We played on Court 10, one of those courts that goes the “wrong way” and there was definitely a head wind on the east side of the court. Here’s a photo of us after the match, taken by Roz King. I play Sherri Bronson  next, who took out Donna Drosner without drama, 64 62. Tina Karwasky, the 4 time defending champion beat Debbie Burgess 62 60 and faces Leslie Airola Murveit, who had to play her doubles partner, Andrea Barnes. Leslie won 63 75.

In doubles, Robin Harris and I played Laurie Helgeson (Ginger’s sister in law) and Sue Sprague and won 60 62. Robin played terrific tennis (to absolutely no one’s surprise), and it was a fun match. We play Sherri and Ann Stanley who beat Drosner/Burgess; on the other side are Barnes/Murveit (who beat Rita Rector/Julie David) and Karwasky/Jan Kirkland Cochran, who too out Sheila Johnson/Carol Gay.

Though the 70s had no upsets, Betty Wachob, the defending champion and #2 seed, had to go three hours to subdue Mary Alice Pisani. Cathie Anderson had a tough match with Ann Hunt, finally winning 75 75. Brenda Carter beat Carolann Castell 3,2 and Charleen Hillebrand beat Patti Boyer 0,1.

The top four seeds in doubles all advanced without dropping a set.

Play began in 80 doubles and the seeds started play in 80 singles…and all the seeds won in straight sets ; Dori deVries takes on her doubles partner Carol Wood and Dorothy Matthiessen plays Mary John Lynch.

The 90s round robin in doubles began today and play has begun in singles as well. Rita Price/Betty Cookson looked sharp in doubles; it’s Betty’s first match on her new knee, but it seemed to be working well..I only watched a few points but saw her run for a short backhand and hit a winner. Yesterday Rita Price beat Cathie Hall in the singles round robin.

There were some TV stations out here today. Here are some links to videos.
