The USTA National 50-90 Hard Courts, Day 2, Tuesday May 10th: All seeds advanced in 50, 60 & 70 singles and doubles. However, Debbie Burgess/Donna Drosner, the 8th seeds in women’s 60s, escaped an upset only by winning a third set tiebreak. Sue Sprague/Laurie Helgeson, the 6th seeds, started slowly but won the last 9 games of the match to win 36 63 60. Robin Harris and I play them next and since I walked up at 3-3 in the first set, they looked pretty good while I was watching.
Robin and I beat Lorna Brooks/Joan Avedian 61 60 today and had some fun points against old friends of mine from the Central Valley. Meeting old tennis friends and making new ones is one of the nice things about playing national tournaments.
In singles I played Ginny Beneke, the survivor of a four hour match yesterday. She didn’t seem the least bit fatigued when we played today, she got to my dropshots and had good responses to them. We had a lot of good points, but I won 61 60. I asked her how she stays so fit (she looks much younger than 60!) and she said biking, running, weights and singles tennis. Here are a couple of photos courtesy of the Balboa facebook page (during the Metropolitan tournament).
Tomorrow I play Yoko Anderson who advanced when Chieko Holt defaulted due to illness.
I watched a bit of Judy Newman/Jenny Rens match today. They are seeded #2 in the 50s. The most unusual point: Jenny/Judy hit a ball well out; but it hit one of their opponent’s foot..on the fly..on a game point, so Judy/Jenny won the point and the game. They won 61 63.
