Rainy Wednesday in Houston at National Clay Courts; Into Singles Quarters and Doubles Semis

Draws are here.

There was a 15% chance of rain in Houston today…unfortunately this was one of those days when it did rain despite the odds and play was delayed about two hours. It was one of the two busiest days here as the 45s started, the consolation was in full swing along with play in the 55/65/75 & 85 divisions.

We got off the court at 7:15 pm, having started the day warming up around 7:45 am…it was a long day and tomorrow will also start early…so this blog will be brief…check the link above for more results.

I played Sally Smith today and it was tough, but a good match. We started a bit after 10:30 and it started to rain a bit before noon…I won the first set 62 and at 2-2 we paused for a bit since it was getting almost muddy…we were in the back so the TD eventually found us and told us play was suspended. We had about a 2 hour delay and had to change courts, as our court was one of the last to dry. When we came back, I won four out of five games and the set 63.

Susan beat Colleen Ferrell 63 63; Andrea Barnes beat Ginny Beneke by the odd score of 61 06 60; Betsy Kuhle edged a net rushing Sherri Bronson 75 76; Leslie Murveit advanced as did Pat Purcell, Kathy Foulk and Bunnie Jackson. I play Kuhle tomorrow at 10am and Susan plays Foulk at 10:30.

In doubles we played Smith and Kim Dean and won 61 61, though it was closer than the score indicated…Susan served one game that had a LOT of deuces at the beginning of the second set (at 1-1) and after that we got a lot of momentum going for us. We play the winner of Kuhle/Purcell and Clemmer/Foulk tomorrow at 2:30.

In other action…highlights…

W75: Brenda Carter edged Anne Eaton 26 76 63 to advance to the semis against top seeded Gwenda Ward. Betty Wachob plays Toni Novack in the other semi.

W55: There were a lot of upsets in doubles…Rainy Miller/Anna Zimmermann, seeded 9-16 upset the #2 seeds 61 62! And Maria Nunez/Heather Herman beat Mary Dailey/Erika Smith in an epic, 36 76 76 (5)! Shelly Works/Leonara Wright (9) beat the #5 seeds in three sets…they face Miller/Zimmermann next.

The 45s started today too…more on that hopefully tomorrow. But I did get a photo of Patricia Zerdan, who represented the USA in Turkey last week, and top seeded Julie Thu.

There was also the gala dinner tonight which many missed due to playing…I heard the food was outstanding though!
