The Southern 75s edged host Texas today in San Antonio. The match came down to the doubles and it was a long match, featuring a lot of lobs (from Carolyn Henderson, Texas) and baseline rallies, punctuated by fierce forehands from Burnett Herrick (Southern). In the end Southern won 75 63 to win the title.
Florida repeated in the 80s, led by Jane Lutz. Photos tomorrow…
In other play, the semis of the 35s and 45s are set. In the 35s, the three seeds, Southern (to play SoCal) and Texas (to play an unseeded team) advanced.
In the 45s, it’s NorCal vs Texas and Southern vs SoCal. The Southern team is so deep that I told them they should split up…they invited me to move into their area and play on their team instead (I like San Diego though!). C
SoCal 45s beat a wounded MidAtlantic team. Their captain tore her calf yesterday, and their #2 singles player had a bad knee, but played singles and doubles nonetheless. Martha Condyles, their top player, took on Gretchen Magers today and scrambled well for a while…then Gretchen closed the door quickly.
NorCal 45s beat Eastern, taking two singles and the #2 doubles…and possibly #1, they had split when I left.
Semis are tomorrow at 9am…I play Fran Chandler….
