Southern beat Southern California (9 states vs 1/2 state…) 3/2, behind strong singles play by 55s World Champion Diane Barker, Sue Bartlett and Wendy McColskey. Diane beat 60s world champion Tina Karwasky 61 63 and Wendy beat Tracey Thompson 63 63 and as usual my match lasted much longer (4 hours…and it was HOT, high 80s and humid). Sue played an excellent match and won 46 75 64, overcoming cramps in the second and mixing up drop shots, crisp volleys and deep groundstrokes.
Florida swept NorCal in singles, with Kerry Young beating Leslie Murveit 62 61; Mary Ginnard beat Andrea Barnes in straight sets and Tracy VIebrock going three long sets to beat Kathy Barnes.
In the 65s, Southern and Florida were battling it out for the gold when I left after Florida won two singles; Florida was in a third set at #1 doubles and Southern was in control at #2. (Florida won 3/2 behind a 3 set doubles win at #1 doubles and singles wins at #2 and #3 singles.
SoCal was up 2/1 over New England when we left. Carol Gay upset Molly Hahn 64 64 at #1 singles. (SoCal beat NE and placed third)
The dinner is tonight and I’ll have more updates later.
