Sung Wins First Gold Ball at Germantown!

Roberta Sung won her first USTA gold ball today, combining with Donna Fales to upset defending champions Norma Veal and Katie Koontz, who were playing in their 8th consecutive 65’s doubles final together. It was a close match, with the #3 seeds coming back from a set down to win 63 in the third. Dimond/Hammer took the bronze by default over deVries/Gunderson.

Fales also won the singles title, beating Susanne Clark 76 61. Dori deVries came in 3rd, beating Roz King in 3 sets to take the bronze.

In the 75’s, to recap, Ryerson beat Russ in the singles final; Price beat Hoffman to take the bronze.

In the 85’s, Cheney won the round robin tournament. Alice Jones pushed her hard in their match, forcing her to 3 sets. Jones also beat Mary Mentzer, who won the 85 clay courts in 3 sets. Mentzer beat Scoggins in straight sets and Scoggins beat Jones in straight sets, so we’ll leave it to the mathematicians to determine who finished 2nd in this event, but it appears to be Mentzer who won 3 sets and lost 4; Scoggins won 2 and lost 4 and Jones won 3 and lost 6. Since Scoggins beat Jones, she wins the bronze.
