Today, the seeds played their first rounds, and were really put to the test. Most of the field, in both age groups, are from Colorado. # 1 seed, Marlo Carruth played a tough opponent, Vicki Leroux, TX and pulled it out, 62, 6-4 great points played by both. Simona Bruetting from Colorado, won 6-2, 6-0 against Ginger Phillips Of Colorado. Both ladies are into the semi-finals.
The Women’s 50 singles had a bit more excitement. # 2 seed Shannon Cross, from Denver, lost to Phylis Zilm, out of Glenwood Springs, Colorado 6-1, 5-7, 2-6. Phylis has been off the Senior Circuit for awhile, but is a very strong player, and played the Pro Satellites, back in the day. She plays her semi- final against Jean Jansen, Louisville, Co, who received a default in the quarters, from Gail Warden. Erika Smith beat Maria Nunez 6-2, 6-2, for a semi-final bout against me, who, went 3 sets against Stacy Swiggart, from Steamboat, Co. 6-2, 3-6, 6-1
I’m really struggling with the altitude, keeping my balls in, and Stacy played a great attacking game, forcing errors on me in the second set. After losing the first game of the third set, I really thought I could be going home. But, I forced myself to hit my shots and stay aggressive. Moving the ball around, and adding more topspin, I found myself hitting some much needed passing shots, to get ahead. And I think, Stacy may have run out of gas. Lucky for me.
The doubles also started today. The draws are very small, and the finals for the 40’s, will be Sunday, #1 Mary Dailey-Vicki Leroux vs # 2 Simona Bruetting-Jill Vanderkool
The Women’s 50 doubles final is also set, but will be played on Saturday with top seeds,
# 1 Mary Dailey- Erika Smith vs Shannon Cross-Stacy Swiggart. The tournament hosted a nice BBQ out by the pool. Chicken, Beef Brisket, beans, potato salad, and green salad. Not to mention, yummy desserts, margaritas and beer !!! It was a great evening. The temperature outside was in the 90’s. I’m so glad we are playing Indoors !!!!
