USA M80 Tennis Team Advances to Final in Crete; W/M 75 & W80 All Fall 2/1

Link to streaming (selected matches) beginning Sunday

The USA M80 Team Swept Switzerland 3/0. Geoff Moore started the team off strongly with a 61 61 win over Mortal. Michael Beutyman was in a pickle against Petr Kolacek at #1, down 46 35 before “cruising” to a 46 76(5) 10-3 win. Les Buck/Jimmy Parker won the doubles point without dropping a game. They now have a day off before the final on Friday against GBR.

The USA M75 fell 2/1 to Australia. Australia, led by legendary Andrew Rae, won both singles matches (over Marc Mazo at #2 and Dave Sivertson at #1) but David Fish/Roger Pearce edged Tony Dawson (who USED to play for USA) and Ross Orford 10-8 in a match tiebreak. They now play in the 5-8 bracket. They play Italy tomorrow on Court 16.

The W80 fell to top seeded France. Betty Wachob at #2 lost 76 61 to Syulvie Galfard Kirsten and Sue Kimball really pushed another legend, Gail Beneditti before falling 76 (5) 75. Sue and Betty beat Galfard Kirsten/Lawrence Goulard 64 75 to win the doubles point. They play Germany tomorrow for silver (they are already guaranteed bronze). And since they won the doubles point today…anything is possible.

The W75 lost 2/1 to Australia. Sheryl Kerwick from Australia won at #2 singles 67 (8) 60 62 over Liane Bryson (USA); Gwneda Ward had a great win over Helen Worland (AUS) 64 75 and Kerwick/Susanne Walter beat Bryson/Ward 61 46 10-4 to clinch the tie. USA W75 are also in a three team round robin (so every set counts), and play Great Britain tomorrow on Center Court (so a streaming court for those who like to arise early or go to bed late (West Coast). USA is already assured of a bronze medal but with a round robin…anything is possible.

The W85 and M85 had a day off. USA M85 play Chile on Court 2 (another streaming court I believe) tomorrow.

The W85 (unfortunately without their #2 player, Roz King) faces will play France tomorrow on Court 18.
