After three days of play in the Alice Marble Cup, Diane Barker finally lost a game, to Germany’s #1, Sabine Schmidt. Susan Wright preceded Barker with a 62 60 win over Karin Plaggenborg. Margret Beyer (shown below) and Schmidt ousted Pat Purcell/Leslie Murveit in a very close match 64 67 76 to salvage the doubles point. The USA advances to the final against Great Britain who scored a 2/1 win over France, splitting the singles before trouncing the French in doubles.
The USA Connolly Cup team, W55, rebounded from their loss to Germany (who also upset Great Britain today to advance to the final), by trouncing Argentina 3/0 to advance to the 5/6 playoff against #8 seeded Netherlands. Vicki Buholz and Tracy Houk won in straight sets and Buholz/Judy Newman won in three sets. Tracey Thompson is unfortunately down for the count with the flu.
The USA Bueno Cup (W50) had a day off and play the semis tomorrow.
In the men’s 50s, Perry Cup, Sweden won both singles and the doubles point was not played. the USA will play for fifth starting tomorrow.
Both the men’s 55 & 60s played Great Britain today and both advanced to the semis.
The men’s 55 won 3/0 behind singles wins by Bill Moss and Mike Tammen and a doubles win by Stu Saiki/Bill White.
The men’s 60s won 2/1, with Max Buyckx dropping a tough three setter to Paul French at #1 singles 75 in the third. Ross Persons was the VIP today, winning at #2 singles and combining with Wes Cash (a last minute addition to the team) to win the doubles point 62 in the third.
