  • USA W 40 & 45 Reach Semis in Miami Beach; M35, 40, W 35 Fall in Quarters

Posted on October 23, 2019 8:07 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

Writing today from California, USA; Oct. 23, 2019

The USA W45 team (Margaret Court Cup) were in action on Wednesday at the North Miami Beach Tennis Center. After having two days off (having received a default from Brazil and a bye), they faced Canada. Nancy Hilliard at #2 and Sophie Woorons at #1 easily won their matches and Jenny Klitch/Tracie Currie looked to be on their way to doing the same, having won the first set 60, when the Canadians roared back and won the second set. No worries though, Jenny/Tracie won the match tiebreak (played in the knockout rounds only in this event in non-deciding matches) 10-5. They play top-seeded France in the semis on Thursday.

The USA Women’s 40 team, the Young Cup, advanced to the semis by winning their round robin group, then receiving a bye in the quarters. They play #1 seeded France in the 40s.

The USA Suzanne Lenglen Cup team (W35), finalists last year, fell to…you guessed it, France, in the quarters. Kaysie Smashey lost in three sets at #2 singles; Cup team rookie Heather Nobler was defeated in straight set. Evgenia Dockter/Julie Thu were edged 12-10 in the match tiebreak, giving France a 3/0 win.

The Italia Cup team, M35, after beating Canada yesterday, faced Netherlands in the quarters and lost both singles; Netherlands then defaulted the doubles point. Matt Hane at #2 singles lost in three sets; Jonathan Sucupira lost in straights at #1. They will now play for fifth place.

The Tony Trabert Cup team also lost to France, 2/1 (France defaulted the doubles point. Paulo Barros at #2 and Ross Duncan at #1 fell in tight two-set matches.

The Dubler Cup team (which won yesterday in the round robin), had today off and is now playing for 8th-11th.

  • USA Win Five of Six Matches on Day 1 of Young Seniors World Team Championships

Posted on October 20, 2019 8:28 pm by Carolyn Nichols 2 Comments

    Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

The ITF Young Seniors (ages 35, 40 and 45 and over) World Team Championships began today in Miami Beach at the Flamingo Tennis Center and North Miami Beach at the Tennis Center there.

The opening ceremonies were held yesterday in North Miami Beach. In addition to the parade of nations, the opening featured a person jumping out of a plane and entertainers from South Beach singing and dancing.

It’s very very hot here, high 80s or better and very humid.

Today, Monday, all USA teams were in action. I watched the women’s 45 team of Sophie Woorons, Jenny Klitch, Nancy Hilliard and Tracie Currie. They played Paraguay, who seemed to have stacked their lineup…the #2 player had recently beaten the #1 player in an ITF tournament 63 60. So Jenny had a good match against a feisty player who served well and moved well, but was streaky. Jenny won 64 63. Sophie made short work of her opponent at #1 and showed off some flashy (and effective) jumping forehands and backhands. Nancy and Tracie won the doubles point.

In other action, the men’s 35s won 2/1 against Finland; Matt Hane at #2 and Jonathas Sucupira both won in straight sets to clinch the tie though Brandon Blankenbaker and rookie Quinn Borchard fell in three sets in the doubles.

The women’s 35s & 40s both won 3/0 against Ireland and Mexico respectively. The 35s had Kaysie Smashey at #2 singles, Heather Nobler at #1 and Julie Thu/Eugenia Dockter won the doubles point. On the 40s team, Lizl Kotz at #2 and Amanda Parson at #1 won the singles points while Millie Yablonicky and Yulia Bolotova won the doubles point.

The men’s 40s beat Turkey 3/0. Paulo Barros played #2 while Michael Halperin played #1 singles; Ross Duncan/Chris Groer took the doubles point.

The men’s 45s were the only USA team to be unseeded. They played a seeded team, Australia first round and unfortunately lost both singles matches; rookie Raj Vaswani fell at #2 and Michael Chang (no, not that Michael Chang) lost at #1 singles before Neil Grover and Art Hernandez won the doubles point.

Draws and results are here (click on “matches” to see the schedule and daily results).

  • USA Wins W65, 70, 85, M 75/85 Friday in Umag; W75 & 80 Finish Second; M65,70, & 80 Place Third

Posted on September 20, 2019 8:04 am by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

    Writing from California, USA

The USA has won five gold medals in Umag so far by Friday, two silver and three bronze. What a fantastic effort by our “super” Super Senior Teams!

The Kitty Godfree Cup, W65, trounced Germany 3/0 with Wendy McColskey at #2 and Tina Karwasky at #1 winning in straight sets. Jan Kirkland Cochran/Lil Peltz Petow completed the 3/0 win.

The Althea Gibson Cup, W70, battle hardened after winning two matches in deciding doubles to reach the final, won both singles against Great Britain to win the gold. Judy Dixon edged Shirley Fox at #2 76 75 and Toni Novack beat Margory Love by a similar score 75 75 to secure the win.

Queens Cup, W75, fell to France, losing both singles decisively. France was a level above the rest of the competition this year with Sylvia Galfard at #2 and Michelle Bichon at #1. The USA finishes with silver medals which is a fantastic finish for the team.

The Women’s 85, who played Argentina several times this week, split singles yesterday and had an unbeatable lead of 5-1 after that.

The Women’s 80 playoff bracket was a 3 team round robin. The USA lost yesterday 2/1 to Argentina, and beat France on Wednesday. Argentina beat France today 2/1 so USA finishes second.

The Bitsy Grant team, M75, handed Peter Pokorny rare losses in beating Austria to win the Cup. Don Long apparently hit the wall in singles after a series of marathon singles wins and lost at #2 singles, but Jimmy Parker beat Pokorny at #1 60 76 and Parker/Long won the doubles point 60 61.

The Britannia Cup, M65 placed third, beating Australia in both singles matches. Gary Jenkins won in three sets at #2 singles and Geoff Cykman won at #1. USA #1 Mark Meyers and AUS #1 Andrew Rae didn’t play today.

In Jack Crawford Cup, M70, the USA beat Switzerland 3/0 to win bronze with singles wins by Geoff Moore at #2 in three sets, Bob Litwin at #1 in straight sets and Steve Gottlieb/Brent Abel in doubles.

The Gardnar Mulloy, M80 team edged Sweden 2/1 to finish third. Lester Sack was the MVP today, winning at #2 singles 13-11 in a Match tiebreak and then combining with Wilbur Jones to win the deciding doubles (after Quall fell at #1 singles) in two tight sets.

I will add more photos later.

  • World Championships Day 4: Played a Match!

Posted on August 13, 2019 11:35 am by Carolyn Nichols Comment

    Lisbon, Portugal

It’s Tuesday in Lisbon; the Individual World Championships began Saturday and due to byes and a default today was the first day I played a match of any kind. Robin and I played at the Club Internacional de Foot-Ball, and won 61 60 against two nice women, Salete Nery from Brazil and Elize Preuyt from So Africa. Nery has only been playing eight years and Elize works full time as a teacher, but both love the game and are enjoying the world championships. We are now into the quarters.

Susan Wright and Pat Medrado won their first round by the same score. Jenny Cerff and Tracey Thompson dropped the first three games of their match today and then won the next 8, winning 63 62. Both teams are in the quarters and on a semifinal collision course. Tracey won her second round singles match and Diane Barker won her first, both are into the round of 16 now, with Susan Wright and myself.

Clockwise from top left; A Florida D2 College player (lefty); Elna Botha, RSA,Carolyn; Robin; Jenny Cerff

    Other American results:

Women: Jenny Klitch in women’s 50s is into the quarters. Fran Chandler fell in a very well played match to Helga Nauck from Germany, the 3rd seed 64 75. Shelly Works lost to Mariana Metola of Argentina in the round of 32. Vicki Buholz won a contentious match with Marina Korepanova of Russia 64 in the third..her reward, a meeting with top-seeded Klartje Van Baarle of Belgium, new to the age division. In doubles, Fran Chandler/Shelly Works advanced; Buholz/Gayle Prejean won and Mary Dailey was playing with Van Baarle.

Men: In the 50s, Dana Gill fell to #7 seed Fernando Granero of Spain 62 76; in the 55s, Willie Alumbaugh upset #2 seeded Simon Arms of Australia in three sets to reach the round of 16; Scott Works fell to Michael Kudinoff of Sweden 76 62, but had beaten the #16 seed a day earlier; in the 60s, defending champion and top seed Mark Vines is into the round of 16 as is Danny Waldman; Waldman faces Glenn Busby of Australia there. In doubles Waldman/Norbert Henn, Busby/Vines and Ross Persons/Joakim Berner are still going.

In mixed, Vicki Buholz/Jerome Vanier (France) are in the round of 16 in the 55s; in the 60s, Jack and Diane Barker take on the first seeds in the round of 16 and #2 seeded Ross Persons/Robin Harris are also in the round of 16.

The order of play isn’t out yet, but given that it’s Wednesday tomorrow and we are in the round of 16, I assume we have the singles round of 16 tomorrow.

  • Alice Marble Cup Team Defeats Brazil; USA M60 Advance on Sunday in Portugal; USA Goes 6/0 on Day 1

Posted on August 4, 2019 1:43 pm by Carolyn Nichols 3 Comments

    Lisbon, Portugal

Today was the start of the ITF Seniors World Team Championships. We played Brazil today, starting at 9:30. I played #2 singles and won 60 60; Diane played #1 and won by the same score and Susan Wright/Robin Harris played flawlessly in doubles to complete the win.

After we won our tie, we wandered over to the men’s 60 match (on court 24 of 24). They had started the day at a deficit, dropping #2 singles (Ross Persons) but Mark Vines won at #1 fairly comfortably (dropping 4 games) and Danny Waldman/Mike Tammen played great doubles to win the match 62 62.

We then went to watch Tracy Houk play #1 singles for the USA women’s 55 team. Vicki Buholz won at #2 singles, but Tracy was in a dogfight…which 4 hours and 50 minutes later she lost so it came down to the doubles, at which time we left. The USA won the doubles, 60 36 63, with Vicki Buholz and Mary Dailey taking the doubles point.

On our way out we saw the USA men’s 55 take on Portugal on the Center Court. It was a very noisy, pro Portugal crowd watching. Stu Saiki won at #2 singles and rookie Cup player Leo Young, playing his first ever Cup match was put in at #1 singles. He dropped the first set 64, then we had to leave. However, the USA team did win the tie 2-1, winning the doubles point.

The Women’s 50s won 3/0 in Estoril, dropping only four games. The USA Men’s 50s won 3/0 over Bolivia. Both teams are off tomorrow.

Susan, Robin and I walked up the Park Eduardo VII to the bridge, which had a fantastic view over Lisbon to the sea, with a maze below the bridge leading to buildings, then to the sea.

We then walked to the El Corte Ingles and went to the grocery store of course. That one is huge. I got fresh squid and cooked it for dinner…along with salmon for the less adventurous.

We have the day off and will practice early tomorrow. Tuesday we take on Spain.

  • Finals Day, National Women’s Hard Courts, La Jolla: Two Marathons in One Day!

Posted on May 18, 2019 5:27 am by Carolyn Nichols Comment
  • Friday was finals day at the USTA National Hard Courts at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. I didn’t get to see much tennis because I was on court most of the day from about 11:30 till about 8pm. Susan Wright and I played our second marathon in a month, and it was a tough match. I came away with the 26 75 76(4) win in about 3.5 hours (was down 41 in the third but kept on fighting). Susan is as gracious in defeat as in victory, the sign of a champion. About 90 minutes later Robin Harris and I took on Susan and Shannon Carney in the doubles final. Three hours later Susan and Shannon came away with a well deserved 57 63 62 win.
  • Shannon won the 3/4 playoff over Cindy Johnson in a match tiebreak 14-12. Their tiebreak (they were playing next to us) seemed to go on forever, though I think their match was shorter than ours. Erin Boynton/Abbi Neuthaler won the bronze over Una Davis/Tracey Thompson. Kathy Vick took 5th and Erin Boynton took 7th. (The tournament had a quarterfinal playoff and then a 7/8 playoff for the quarterfinal losers who lost their first match in the playoff, a first.
  • Jen Dawson was the only double gold winner of the week, edging top seeded Andrea Rice in a grueling 75 75 win. I saw a little of the beginning of the match and it was fantastic tennis. Jen is a rock at the baseline and Andrea played athletic all court tennis. You won’t find two nicer competitors anywhere (Shelly Works, you have competition for this title in these two!). Dawson teamed with Jenny Rens Keller to win the doubles over Rice/Anna Zimmermann 62 62. It was Jenny Keller’s first gold ball.
  • Conan Lorenzo, Andrea Rice and Jen Dawson with TD Bill Kellogg, photo courtesy of Mary Johnson
  • Kristen Kepler won the 50 singles bronze over Keller; Deb Higa/Jennifer Lyons took the bronze over Kepler/Neuthaler.
  • Judy Dixon won the 70 singles with an emphatic 63 60 win over #2 seeded Molly Hahn. I believe it was her first singles gold ball. Liane Bryson/Kathy Bennett won the doubles over Dixon/Vicky McEvoy 64 63. Sue Kimball edged Carol Gay in three sets for the singles bronze but Carol Gay/Sheila Johnson came away with the doubles win against Hahn/Kimball to win the doubles bronze.
  • Lorna Brooks, unseeded, won the 80 singles 62 64 over top seeded Dorothy Wasser. She did it the hard way too, beating the #3, #2 and #1 seeds en route to the title. Brooks is from Wyoming now but used to live in Exeter, in the Central Valley of California and we used to practice together about 35 years ago… I knew how good she was then and so wasn’t too surprised when she won. She was one of the top 2 juniors in SoCal as a youngster (Sally Huss was the top junior). She played with her hair down, which amazed some of the spectators (it doesn’t move). Lola O’Sullivan/Barbara Oldfield were the surprise doubles winner. For Barbara it was her first USTA ball of any color! They beat Claudia Giacommini/Dorothy Matthiessen 76(4) 63 for the gold.
  • Burnett Herrick won the 80 singles bronze by default (injury) over Carol Wood; Herrick/Wasser beat Lynn Tietz/Wood for the 80 doubles bronze.
  • The 90s final is this morning at 9am between Rita Price and Jane Lutz, followed by the de facto doubles final (it’s a three team round robin between the two undefeated teams) scheduled for 1pm.
  • Draws are here.

  • Todo, Cass, Barker, Novack, & Weber Win Singles Gold at National Clay Courts

Posted on April 14, 2019 4:17 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

    Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

Mika Todo of Japan won the 40 singles in Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday, beating top-seeded Lizl Kotz in the final in straight sets. However, Kotz won the gold in singles, combining with Tabatha Waddell to win the three team round robin.

Julie Cass put on a masterful display of attacking tennis to win the 50 singles, beating Jenny Klitch 64 62 in the final. The rallies were fantastic, but Cass controlled enough of them to finish victorious on a windy, warm day. Klitch and Andrea Rice though earned the doubles gold, beating Cass/Vesna McKenna to take the doubles gold. Alissa Finerman/Natalie Herreman won the doubles bronze and Rice beat McKenna for the singles bronze.

Diane Barker beat me 63 64 to win the 60 singles for the third straight year. It was a pretty good match, but she stayed on track with her aggressive play. Susan Wright beat Kathy Vick 61 61 to win the bronze. Ligia Bottinelli won her first gold ball, combining with Pat Purcell to win the 60 doubles over Susan Wright and me. They stayed aggressive throughout the match, winning 64 76. Kris McDonald/Kathy Zanon won the bronze in three sets, and were the last match finished for the second day in a row.

Toni Novack used her dropshot and guile well to beat Judy Dixon in a tight two-setter to win her FIRST singles gold ball. They have both been playing great tennis all year. Dixon didn’t go home though without some gold, winning every doubles match, with Vicky McEvoy convincingly. In the final they beat Donna Fales/Betty Wachob. Neither bronze ball match was played in the 70s; Brenda Winstead won the singles bronze by default and Molly Hahn/Sue Kimball took the doubles bronze (both playoffs involved Gwenda Ward, who was injured).

Inge Weber beat Dori DeVries to take the 80s gold; Dorothy Wasser beat Lola O’Sullivan for the singles bronze. Wasser/Weber won the 80s doubles round robin and Carol Wood/Burnett Herrick were finalists.

    Draws are here.

  • Miami Beach RC: Friday Vibes; Works Wins a Saturday Marathon

Posted on March 9, 2019 5:02 pm by Carolyn Nichols 4 Comments

    March 9, 2019

Friday in Miami Beach…is noisy! Bands tuning up, motorcycles racing, rush hour traffic, high season energy. I played Dagmar Sperneder from Austria in the de facto 60s final and won. We played one court removed from a busy street, and across the street from a park where a band sounded like it was making sure its instruments worked (they did, believe me). It was noisy and windy and basically a normal high season Friday afternoon in Miami.

There were a lot of players onsite yesterday, unlike the sleepy atmosphere of Wednesday afternoon. The matches ran an hour late…we barely finished before dark. Our 3:30 match was scheduled for 2:45 on Thursday night, 3pm by Friday morning and by Friday afternoon the time had changed to 3:30, with the only notifications appearing on the website.

Shelly Works was soooo happy to finally play a match. She arrived Monday and didn’t get to play till Friday (she did receive a default on Thursday). Shelly actually got to play twice…she and Rainy Miller won their 6:30 pm doubles match and Shelly looked like she wanted to run around and play singles on the doubles court. Both played well and won. Saturday update: Shelly won the final in three sets, despite losing the first set 60 and facing three consecutive match points at 4-5 in the third, taking the tiebreak 7-3 against top seeded Simone Vasconcellos. Rainy as tweeting a group of players first on changeovers, then game by game and finally point by point in the TB.

    Fran, Rainy, Carolyn, Kaysie, Shelly

Jenny Klitch blitzed the opposition in the 50s, winning the final against Julie Dybendahl of Australia without losing a game. Dybendahl though upset the 2nd seed in the semis, and had a good tournament herself. Donna Fales (W70) and Jenny are shown below; Donna finished 3rd in the women’s 70s and Toni Novack, USA finished 2nd. Leila Musalem won the event.

Nancy Hilliard (45) and Kaysie Smashey (35) added to the trophy haul for Texas, winning their singles events. Smashey beat Heather Nobler 63 63 in the final. CORRECTION: Nobler BEAT Smashey 63 63. Hilliard beat unseeded Tangerine Manning who fought her way to the final with consecutive 3-set wins, upsetting Kristen Kepler in the semis.

In men’s divisions, winners are: M35: Henry Choi; M40: Ry Tarpley UPDATE: I omitted Tarpley’s opponent, he plays vs Michael Halperin in the final. M45: Renee Busch vs Philippe LeBlanc in the final tomorrow; M50: Eoin Collins vs Gabriel Keymer; M55: Denis Dumas vs Vincent Horcasitas; M60: Ross Persons (seeded #5; #2 seeded Stu Saiki retired due to a bum leg in the quarters to Eric Friedman; Persons beat Friedman); M65: Fritz Raijmakers (Netherlands) vs Galba Couto; M70: Michael Beautyman, seeded 2, beat top seeded Bruce Barrett (also his doubles partner) in three sets; M75: Jimmy Parker and Fred Drilling play the final tomorrow; M80 had only 2 players.

    Bruce Barrett

    In doubles: M35: Choi/Nick Rainey won; M45: Keymer/Mehech d. (1) Engel/Sack; M55: Persons/berner d. Blanno/Garman; M65:(1)Raijmakers/Danny Shaw d. (2) Barrett/Beautyman; M75: Jonsson/Parker won; unfortunately they had to play Drilling/Tibbits in the semis and won that in three sets…

In women’s doubles: 35s: Heather Nobler/Smashey won the 35s (only two teams); 45s: Chase/Williams will face Vasconcellos/Yanagi who beat the #2 and #1 seeds respectively. Michelle Willams is Rhyne Williams mom… 55s is a round robin and finishes tomorrow.

  • Karwasky, Motevassel, Parker Win Singles Gold Slams in 2018; Karwasky, Kirkland-Cochran, Lutz Win Doubles Gold Slams

Posted on November 13, 2018 9:20 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

Tina Karwasky (Glendale, CA) won gold slams in 2018 in 65 singles and doubles. She did not drop a set in winning the clay, hard, grass and indoors. For her doubles partner, Jan Kirkland-Cochran (GA) it was her first gold slam.

Oren Motevassel won the gold slam in men’s 50 singles. It was his first gold slam. In 2017 he came close but was unable to play the grass though he won the hard, clay and indoors. He says clay is his most challenging surface, but that grass is his favorite.

Nov. 8, 2017; Miami Beach, FL:

Jimmy Parker, fully recovered from a knee replacement, and new to the 75s, dominated the singles in that division. He also won two doubles nationals with Ken Robinson (CA), the mixed 70 Hard (with Kathy Bennett, CA), and two super senior father/son nationals with Chris Parker (CA).

Jane Luz (FL) won the 90 doubles gold slam by the narrowest of margins. She and Rita Price (CO) split the four singles nationals and easily won the first three doubles nationals. They split up for the grass and Lutz/Janet Hubbard (CA) edged Price/Harrison 12-10 in the match tiebreak to win the gold and for Lutz to complete the gold slam.

    Congratulations everyone!
