The Kitty Godfree Cup, Women’s 65, beat France today 2/1. I won a very long two-setter against Betty Michel at #2 singles, 75 62 (about 2.5 hours!)…Betty is tough, and gets a lot of balls back and hits a lot of winners too. I had to grind.
Susan played another perfect match against Benedict Le Grand, beating her 61 61, playing well from all parts of the court and frustrating Benedict a lot!
Carolyn Lane and Bunnie Jackson played the doubles point and the ITF shortened the format to short sets (first to 4, win by 2, basically like a match in which each set started at 2-2). Unfortunately, the score of the first set was messed up…they thought it was first to 4, win by 1 without a tiebreak. So at 3-4 they thought it was set and started a new one…which they won 4-0 and the tiebreak was long and anxious. The French won 13-11…heartbreaker. The French got a lot of balls back and moved well.
We play Australia who has a very tough team.

The Men’s 65s won 3/0 vs France; Waldman at #2, Vines at #1 and Tammen/Persons in doubles. They play defending champs Australia in the final…with Glenn Busby. Should be a great match.
The Men’s 70s beat Netherlands 2/0 behind the singles play of Lenny Wofford at #2 and Bob Barrie at #1 (playing his first cup he has won three consecutive 3-setters at #1 singles). This team is in the final despite their #1, Dave Sivertson having a bad case of tennis elbow and being unable to play, though he is on site coaching! They play France I believe in the final.
The men’s 75s beat Austria 2/0 today and play Spain in the final.
