Americans Find Success in Individual World Championships: Wednesday Midday

A number of American Super Seniors are continuing to do well this week in the ITF Individual World Championships in Villach, Poertschach and Klagenfurt.

Women:

In the 60s, Mary Ginnard and Tina Karwasky started their march through the draw today, with Tina taking on a tough opponent, Wendy Gilchrest from Australia. Tina won 64 62. Mary beat a German player 60 60 and takes on Austiran in the next round.

In the 65s, Brenda Carter advanced to the quarters where she faces top seed Gail Benedetti, to whom she lost in the team event last week, and who is also the defending world champion, while Carol Clay and Betty Wachob fell to tough opponents.

Charleen Hillebrand scored the upset of the week thus far, taking out world #1 and defending champion Heide Orth by the remarkable score of 62 60 in Orth’s first round. She’s continued to build on that play and has reached the quarters along with Cathie Anderson, who had a tough match with Switzerland’s Suzy Bugraff but prevailed in two close sets. Donna Fales has reached the quarters without dropping a game and could be on track to play either Hillebrand or Frances McClennan in the final; Frances and Charleen play in the quarters.

In the 75s Roz King has advanced to the semis with an easy 60 61 win over New Zealand’s Jean Stevens (a 3 set winner yesterday over 4th seeded Brigitte Jung) and faces defending champion Inge Weber there. Ria Graham is playing Elisabeth Von Boemmel, the top seed and world #1 while Lyn Tietz is playing Australia’s Nola Collins in another quarter.

Margaret Canby is playing Frenchwoman Mirelle Giraud in her first round today.

In the 85s, Rita Price and Jane Lutz have easily reached the semis and don’t play further today in that division.

Men:

In the 60s, Fred Robinson has advanced to the quarters where he takes on the second seed in his next match.

In the 65s, Richard Johnson eked his way in the quarters with a 36 64 76 win over the 6th seed, Van de Loo. Jerry Thomas fell in the second round while Les Buck edged the #8 seed Keith Bland 76 in the third in the round of 32 and then lost today in the round of 16 to Schmidle of Germany, the 12th seed. Bruce Barrett fell to Peter Adrigan.

In the 70s, Jimmy Parker and Fred Drilling are winning comfortably, Parker 60 60 and Drilling 75 63 (over an unseeded Czech player).

The entire Bitsy Grant Cup team is playing in Villach. Lester Sack has advanced to the quarters and Herm Ahlers, King Van Nostrand and Fred Farzanegan are still on court (or at least the scores aren’t yet online). Nick Ourusoff won his first round but lost in the second round.

The Gardnar Mulloy Cup team also stayed to play in the individuals and George McCabe has reached the quarters and plays top seeded Lorne Main next; John Powless plays Joe Russell (unseeded, he beat the #7 seed) in another quarter. Doss retired while leading yesterday.

Clem Hopp in the 85s beat Trevisan 64 64 to reach the quarters.

Doubles:

Most of the doubles and mixed is just getting underway. Rita Price is in the mixed 85 final though.
