  • USTA Extends Suspension of USTA Sanctioned Tennis Events

Posted on March 23, 2020 4:22 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

    April 1, 2020

USTA has suspended ITF sanctioned Senior events till July 13, 2020.

USTA has suspended tournaments and programs including leagues which are not ITF sanctioned till June 1.

The full statement from USTA.com is below:

    Updated Statement – March 23, 2020:

Due to the continued situation surrounding the COVID-19 virus, and after discussions with the USTA Medical Advisory Committee, effective immediately the USTA will extend the suspension of USTA sanctioned products and events, including Adult and Junior Tournaments, USTA League, Junior Team Tennis, Team Challenge, Team Tournaments, USTA Schools programs, Tennis on Campus and Wheelchair events, through May 3.

Additionally, recognizing the evolving and fast-changing nature of this situation, the USTA will continue to monitor and assess conditions to make future determinations about events and activities taking place after May 3.

All Category 1 and Super Category 2 National Adult Tournaments with an ITF status, all ITF Junior events and all USTA Pro Circuit and professional events will align with the same calendar as the ITF, ATP and WTA, and be suspended through June 7.

Both the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., and the USTA National Campus, in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, Fla., will remain closed for play and instructional opportunities through May 3. Any patron who wishes to cancel participation in a scheduled activity should contact the specific location for refund information. These policies will be in effect pending additional guidance or directives from each local governmental agency and the CDC. The USTA will continue to monitor and assess conditions to make future determinations about all activities at these facilities.

  • Palm Beach Gardens Super Cat II/ITF Grade I: Bonder-Kerkorian, Klitch, Nichols & Dixon Win Singles Crowns on Friday Day 4

Posted on February 1, 2020 6:01 am by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

    Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

Friday was a long and busy day at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center. Matches started early and were only halted after 7pm by a downpour.

    Singles:

Lisa Bonder-Kerkorian started off the singles with a win in the 40 singles over Kristine Kraujina 61 62.

Erin Boynton and I started at the same time; Bonder-Kerkorian finished their match about the same time we finished the first set! It was a very close match, with a lot of momentum changes. I won 64 63, but the finish was in doubt till the last point finished. Wendy McColskey beat Terri Thomson 61 64 to finish third.

Jenny Klitch played after her doubles partner Bonder-Kerkorian on the same court and we just managed to finish before Klitch beat Julie Dybenthal 60 61. However Dybenthal was happy with her play and said she played much better than she had last time against Klitch. Laurie Capra beat Jill Sickle 61 61 to finish third.

Judy Dixon edged Toni Novack 76 76 in a repeat of last year’s 70 clay court final. Toni said Judy played great. I watched a bit of that match and Judy moves really well and was able to get to many of Novack’s deadly drop shots. Brenda Carter received a default from Molly Hahn, so finished third.

In the 80s, Susanne Clark beat Burnett Herrick and Grace Woo edged Carol Wood 76 in the third; the doubles partners face each other in the final today (weather permitting).

The 30s is a round robin; however Elizabeth Kobak of NY has won the division winning all three of her matches including a 63 63 win over Bonder-Kerkorian.

    Doubles:

The 30s had only two teams but Kristen Charlton/Grace Haggerty got their money’s worth in one match, winning 61 36 76 over Kobak/Jennifer Einhorn.

The 40s final is today (weather permitting) and pits Klitch/Andi Piski agains Tara Pressley/Julie Axelrod.

The 50s was won by Klitch/Bonder-Kerkorian over Boynton/Abbi Neuthaler 61 63. Karen Rembert /Alice Stubbs beat Daniella Esswein/Dybenthal in three sets to place third.

The 60s semis have Aimee Norris/Anne Frautschi against the winner of the rain interrupted match between Neuthaler/Kim Jones and Anne Jacobs/Kathy Zanon which is tied at 22 in the third.

Carter/Dixon won the 70s over Sue Kimball/Pam Simons (who upset #2 seeds Sue Bramlette/Hahn). Carol Clay/Ellen Goodman won the 3/4 playoff by default.

    Carter/Dixon; Weber/Wood; Simons/Kimball; Ellen Markowitz, Weber/Boynton, Clark/Woo

    Bottom: Trish Faulkner/Boynton/Nichols; Boynton/Bonder-Kerkorian

Photos can be found here. (I will be adding action photos over the weekend to this album.)

  • Les Grandes Dames Palm Beach Gardens: Super Cat II/ITF Grade 1

Posted on January 17, 2019 6:19 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

Happy New Year everyone…the first tournament of the year for me anyway is this week in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. (Venus has a place for sale if you are interested).

2019 marks a renewed cooperation between the ITF and USTA, resulting in ITF Grade 1 status for some of our Super Category 2 tournaments and Grade A status for all USTA National tournaments in the 35-85 age divisions, plus mixed. In return the USTA will not require IPIN holders to have a USTA membership in order to play in ITF sanctioned tournaments held in the USA.

Click here to see the draws and results.

As usual, there are a fair number of Canadians here this tournament but not a lot of other foreign players. Below are Irwin Tobias and Adrienne Simmons (who has caused 2 upsets so far).

The tournament is being held at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center in Palm Beach Gardens, just down the street from BallenIsles. There are 18 lovely clay courts here and the facility will be even better next year after a big clubhouse renovation is started and completed. The women’s 40-80 clay courts will be held her in April.

I am playing in a very strong 60s division, led by Diane Barker. Wendy McColskey, Bunny Allare and Kathy Vick are also playing along with Kim Dean, Kathy Foulk, Janet Mosley and Frances O’Sullivan to name a few. All eight seeds reached the quarters without drama.

The 50s lost the 3 and 4 seeds yesterday as Adrienne Simmons (a Georgia based Canadian) beat the #4 seed Daniela Esswein and Alice Stubbs took out #3 seeded Melanie Crampton, both in three sets. Jenny Klitch and Yvette Kruger though the top 2 seeds, cruised into the semis today

The four seeds in the 70s advanced to the semis today with Molly Hahn to face Sue Kimball and Brenda Winstead to face Toni Novack.

In the 80s, Canadian Inge Weber the top seed and Burnett Herrick, the second seed, reached the semis.

In the 50s, Corey Reese and Simmons beat the #2 seeds convincingly to reach the semis.

Lisa Hoffstein/Sally Zasloff took out #5 seeded Peggy Machoian/Joan Oelschlager in the 60 doubles; the remaining 7 seeds advanced.

Hahn/Kimball and Ellen Goodman/Winstead the top 70s seeds, advanced to the semis.

  • Klosters to Ulm via Austria

Posted on August 10, 2018 2:43 pm by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

I bid Klosters adieu at 6:28 am, and five trains, four changes of train and one car rental later reached the rental house in a suburb of Ulm.

Upon arrival in Ulm I rented a car nearby and drove to the house.

Susan and Pat had just awakened when I arrived at 11:30. We eventually got organized and to the TK (Tennis Klub) Ulm on time to meet Dina and Jack. They were delayed a day as Pat had been, due to bad weather for Diane and a mechanical problem for Pat. Fortunately, everyone had planned on arriving a day or more early.

We had a two hour practice, then headed over to the golf club where the Captains’ meetings were to be held. We ran into Shelly Works, Mary Dailey and Ros Nideffer. The 50s women team also had weather related delays.

We hit Aldo and Lidl markets, and had dinner. I scored with a good loaf of bread for about $1.50. Even Susan liked it!

Opening Ceremonies are tomorrow after the captains’ meetings and the draw will be done then.

  • Beating the Rain (and Opponents) on Finals Day in Klosters

Posted on August 9, 2018 1:48 pm by Carolyn Nichols Comment

My first match today was at 9:30 and my last one finished in the dark as it started to rain sometime after 8pm.

I played my singles under cool and breezy conditions against unseeded Helen Litt of NZL. She beat the #2 and #3 seeds en route to the final but it took a toll on her calf I think. She didn’t run for a lot of drop shots for fear of pulling it. I won the match and her calf was ok, so all in all it was a successful final.

Later in the day, after my doubles partner, Kerry Ballard, played her last round robin singles (against Nora Blom), we finished our match which was suspended yesterday, winning 61 62, to reach the final.

Meanwhile, the other semifinal was going on at a different location and Litt/Rosemary Everett won a cliffhanger 46 62 11-9.

We started the doubles final on an unlighted court (Klosters has 4 with lights) at 6:30. We split sets and won the match tiebreak 10-8. I poached at 8-7 to give us two match points…and we only needed the two.

Just as we finished the rain started, though play continued for a while on other courts. Kerry & Ian Ballard, Sue Ellis and Leanne Swaysland, all Aussies, Lisa Prechtel from Netherlands and I had dinner at the club. I had rosti (a fancy name for hash browns, with a fancy price to go with it) with eggs, and it was very good. My big suitcase is in Annelies Simons car and will go with her to Ulm. I am going by train tomorrow early.

Next stop, Ulm, Germany for the ITF World Team Championships. Opening Ceremonies are Saturday!

Klosters is a really nice place…I hope to be back soon and to have more time to explore the area next time.

  • Germany: Practicing on the Red Clay

Posted on June 29, 2018 10:51 am by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

Jenny Cerff and I had a good practice this morning at the ETUF club. The weather has been quite nice, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 50s-low 60s, and a slight breezes, perfect for tennis. Sabine, the TD took a few photos of us from the club balcony overlooking the courts.

The draws are out and I play a good German player on Tuesday afternoon. The draw is below.

After about a two hour workout, I had a massage and Jenny had lunch, then we hit the Edeka to get ice (no ice at the club at all that we could find), and got back to the hotel. We went out wandering on foot to and Aldi market and then to a DM (something like a small Walgreen’s with organic snacks and no Snickers bars) where I got Saptil, my favorite travel laundry soap…though I did just find out there are laundromats nearby, so finding and using one may be another day’s adventure. We passed a lot of bakeries, which had some really tasty looking treats, but managed to resist. We figured out what this parking sign meant…pay parking.

Most of the stores we’ve been frequenting don’t take Visa, MasterCard or AmEx. They do accept some cards, but not those. So be prepared to use cash at Penny Market or Edeka.

This pretty church is next to our hotel, wedged between two modern buildings.

We are practicing very early tomorrow before going to Dusseldorf for the day to watch a German league match. More on that tomorrow (or more likely on Sunday).

  • USA Advances to Quarters in Dubler Cup Tuesday and Semis of Lenglen Cup

Posted on May 3, 2016 7:49 am by Carolyn Nichols 1 Comment

The USA Dubler Cup team, now a two person team after injuries to two players, beat So Africa 2/1 to advance to the QF. They remain in medal contention.

The USA Lenglen Cup (W35) advanced to the semis today despite losing 2/1 to Great Britain. Since Britain lost to Slovenia and Slovenia lost to USA it came down to sets and games. Anyway, by the narrowest of margins the USA Lenglen Cup team is now in the semis of the medal round vs. France.

The Margaret Court (W45) team lost 2/1 to Uruguay. It was a close match and came down to a loss in the 3rd set of the deciding doubles.

The USA Young Cup team did play today (it did not have a day off as previously reported.) The USA beat Germany 2/1 to advance to the 5-8 place playoff group.

The USA Italia Cup (M35) team beat Turkey 3/0 and the Trabert Cup (M40) beat Ireland 3/0. Both teams advance to the 7-12 place playoffs.

  • And it’s a Wrap: USA Wins Three Cups in Umag, Medals in Seven of Eight Cups

Posted on October 5, 2015 11:19 am by Carolyn Nichols Comment

US Teams Strike Gold in Croatia

USA Super Senior Teams were Super Duper in Croatia during the ITF Super Senior World Championships. Super Seniors encompasses age divisions 65-80 in five year increments, so the USA teams were playing for gold in eight Cups in Croatia. The Cups and their names are:

    · Women’s 65: Kitty Godfree Cup

    · Women’s 70: Althea Gibson Cup

    · Women’s 75: Queens Cup

    · Women’s 80: Doris Hart Cup

    · Men’s 65: Britannia Cup

    · Men’s 70: Jack Crawford Cup

    · Men’s 75: Bitsy Grant Cup

    · Men’s 80: Gardnar Mulloy

These Cups are named after legendary players from Australia, the USA and Great Britain (other than the Queens and Britannia Cups). Each Cup tie consists of three matches played consecutively; #2 singles, followed by #1 singles and then doubles. The first three days are devoted to pool (round robin) play, followed by three days of knockout rounds.

The USA nearly swept the women’s divisions, winning the Kitty Godfree, Queens and Doris Hart Cups. The USA won the Doris Hart Cup for the first time.

The USA medaled in all four men’s Cups, finishing second in the Brtiannia and Bitsy Grant Cups and third in the Jack Crawford and Gardnar Mulloy Cups.

The members of the Kitty Godfree Cup team were Brenda Carter (captain), Kerry Young, Carol Clay and Kathy Bennett. They beat Great Britain 2/1 in the final, dropping the doubles point only after securing the Cup by sweeping both singles matches. Carter and Young played singles.

Godfree Cup, Young, Carter, Bennett, Clay

The members of the Queens Cup team were Donna Fales (captain), Lynn Little, Roz King and Grace Woo. They beat Great Britain 3/0 behind the strong singles play of Fales and Little. This team didn’t drop a single match in the 15 played during the week.

Queens Cup, Fales, King, Woo, Little

The Doris Hart Cup members were Rose Austin (captain), Burnett Herrick, Judy Smith and Mary John Lynch. Their toughest match came in the round robin portion of the competition against New Zealand where they split the singles and the first two sets of the deciding doubles before winning a thrilling match tiebreak 10-8.

Hart Cup, Herrick, Austin, Smith, Lynch

The Britannia Cup team members were Brian Cheney (captain), Padg Bolton, Michael Beautyman and Owen Robertson. They lost 2/0 to Spain in the final. Bolton lost a heartbreaking three set match at #2 singles and Cheney fell to the great Spaniard Jorge Camina Borda. Cheney and Beautyman had to win deciding doubles matches twice to reach the final, against Sweden on the first day and France in the semifinals.

The Bitsy Grant Cup team consisted of Joe Bachmann (captain), Rudy Hernando, Lester Sack and Bob Quall. They upset #2 seeded Austria (led by Peter Pokorny) in the semis, but lost Bachmann’s singles services in so doing as he fell and sprained his knee playing Pokorny. However, Hernando and Sack were able to win the doubles point and Sack won at #2 singles. In the final they lost to a tough German team 2/1, salvaging the doubles point after Sack lost a long three setter and Hernando lost a tough match at #1 in two long sets.

USA Bitsy Grant Cup Team, Sack, Hernando, Bachmann, Quall

The Jack Crawford Cup members were Jody Rush (captain), Dick Johnson, Hugh Thomson and David Nash. They lost a tough match in the semis to the Netherlands. USA and Netherlands split the singles but USA unexpectedly fell in doubles. They rebounded to beat Germany 2/1, and this time Thomson/Johnson won the deciding doubles match in straight sets to clinch the bronze. Dick Johnson wore the extra warm up Hugh Thomson brought all week because the airline lost his luggage…he finally got his clothes on Monday, 10 days later!

Crawford Cup, Thomson, Nash, Rush, Johnson

The Gardnar Mulloy Cup team, George McCabe (captain), Neil Hurlbut, John Powless and Chuck Nelson were upset by Germany 2/1 in the semis. McCabe injured a hamstring but fought well, losing in a match tiebreak. Hurlbut couldn’t hold off Herbert Althaus, the top German at #1 singles but Powless/Nelson salvaged the doubles point in a match tiebreak. In the third place playoff, with both Powless and McCabe out with injuries, Hurlbut was the hero of the day, winning both his singles and doubles matches to earn the bronze medal for the USA.

    Gardnar Mulloy Cup

The Althea Gibson Cup team (Betty Wachob, captain, Cathie Anderson, Lee Delfausse and Peggy Andry) lost in their round robin to eventual finalist Netherlands in the third set of the deciding doubles, then swept Switzerland and Australia to finish fifth.

The only USA team in medal contention in the Young Seniors had a really tough match with France today. • Chile, Day 2: Racquets Arrive!

Posted on November 17, 2014 4:54 pm by Carolyn Nichols 2 Comments

It was a good day here, beautiful weather, I got to hit tennis balls, and when I went to the airport my racquets were found! The taxi driver spike no English and I think thought I wanted to go to international cargo arrivals, and wanted T know if he should wait, and I think I correctly told him it could be 30 minutes or 4 hours…my Spanish is getting better by the minute out of necessity.

I hit in the morning with Paul Smith, with whom I am playing this week. Denis Dumas from Canada loaned me one of his racquets, as mine were still I transit from Peru. It was a Wilson Blade 98, and let’s just say that won’t be switching to it anytime soon! It’s a lot heavier than I am used to, but it was nice of Denis to lend it to me.

After hitting I got directions to an electronics store and got a plug adapter (only $4) so I can charge my laptop. I charged my phone yesterday via the USB port on the router in the room and would have felt more clever for thinking to do that if not for the fact that not taking a plug adapter was not clever at all!. (Especially since I had specifically taken it out before I left and (European plug adapters work here.)

I hit a bit with Marc from Canada, served, talked with Heide Orth, and all is well. There’s some altitude, so the balls fly, the courts are variable as far as bounces are concerned and the balls, Head ATP are pretty fast.
