Day 1 in Mexico City (ITF Masters World Team Championships 50/55/60): USA Goes 5-1 in Team Matches

On Day 1 of the ITF World Team Matches in Mexico City, USA won 3/0 in the M/W 55 & 60 2/1 in W50 and lost 2/1 to Great Britain in M50 (losing the deciding doubles in a match tiebreak).

The Men’s 60 (Von Cramm) won 3/0 vs Netherlands. Peter Smith (#2), Tom Coulton (#1) and Bill Moss/Polo Cowan all won in straight sets, though the doubles was close, 75 76 (9).

The Women’s 60 (Alice Marble) won 3/0 against Portugal behind strong performances by Fran Chandler (#2), Vicki Buholz (#1) and Gayle Prejean/Christine Paulson

The Men’s 55 (Austria) beat Portugal 3/0. Eoin Collins won convincingly at #2 but Oren Motevassel had a tough one at #1, pulling it out in three sets. Dana Gill and Vivek Varma won the doubles point.

The Women’s 55 (Maureen Connolly) beat South Africa 3/0. Ros Nideffer won at #2, Julie Cass at #1 and Nideffer/Judy Newman took the doubles point. Ros reported that the courts were very dry and very fast (the altitude is about 7200 feet).

The Women’s 50 (Maria Bueno) team won 2/1 vs Argentina with Amanda Parson-Siegel taking MVP honors, winning #1 singles 76 61 and the deciding doubles (with Isabela Iontosca) 64 64. Heather Waters fell at #1 singles to start the tie.

The Men’s 50 (Fred Perry) team lost a tight one to Great Britain, finishing doubles under the lights (after a delay, moving to a court which had lights. Sean Straley fell at #2, Willie Dann leveled the tie at 1-1 after a straight set win at #1 and Neel Grover/Art Hernandez lost the doubles point 10-6 in the match tiebreak.

  1. Too bad there is no live streaming video of the matches like there was last year in Turkey for the 55s and Majorka this year for 65-80s. I’d love to see more of Eion Collins and Oren Montevossel playing.

    • Apparently that’s up to the ITF masters committee, and the organizers. I’ll see if I can find out who you should write directly, although I can pass the message along
