European Singles/Doubles Champion and Budapest after Dark

Draws are here.

It was a long and busy day in Budapest Saturday. Vicki and I warmed up at 8am. I played my singles final against Pauline Fisher (World #2 W70s) at 9am. I won 61 61 and played well. We had some long games and good points. It was a bit breezy and temperatures were in about the mid-80s.

We had to then wait for the prize giving ceremony for quite a long while. In the interim I changed for doubles and had a bite to eat.

We played the #2 seeds and defending champions from Hungary in the final, Eva Miltenyi and Zsuzsanna Turi. It was a topsy-turvy match…we went up 5-0, only to have the lead blow away (it was quite windy and gusty), when they leveled the set at 5-5 and again at 6-6, but we won the ensuing tiebreak 7-1. The second set was more straight forward…we won 6-1 as Zsuzsanna in particular tired after the long first set. Vicki played great. Andrea Temesvári, a former WTA #7 presented the medals and awards. She’s about 6 feet tall without heels and well over with them!

After another awards ceremony, we went back to our apartment and then went for an early dinner at the restaurant next to the club which was highly recommended by multiple people, and it was quite good.

We then waited till around 8:15 to go into Buda and Pest and the Danube River to see the city light up at night. We crossed the Chain Bridge twice, to see the castle from the Pest side and the Parliament Building from the Buda side. We walked up to the Fisherman’s Bastion for a nice view of the Parliament Building, and of Matthias Church. We walked down from there to the Danube, and took the tram home. It was a very nice ending to our tournament.

  2. Congratulations! You‘ve done so well! Or to say it in the words of Tina Turner: „You‘re simply the best, better than all the rest….“! I love this expression „ a topsy-turvy match“ ! Awesome! I saw Even the New York Times uses it!
