Tennis was a mixed bag for me today…I won my singles and face Susan Wright in the final…but we were waxed in doubles..our opponents were very good today and made us play below par…all credit to them. We play the #4 seeds in the 3/4 playoff. I beat Shannon Carney 75 63 in a long match, over 2.5 hours…again. Susan was done before we finished our first set, which had many momentum changes. I was down 3/1, 4/2 and 54 before rallying to win and both Shannon and I had various strategy changes. Susan beat Ann Young 2,2 so Shannon plays Ann in the 3/4. We play Shannon/Cindy Abel in the 3/4, they lost in three sets to Pat Purcell/Carolyn Lane (and face Erin Boynton/Anne Frautschi in the final).
In other divisions:
85s: Carol Wood/Dorothy Wasser edged Sheila Palmer/Burnett Herrick in 3 sets to win the 85s doubles final. Wood edged Chris Smith in one semi while Wasser beat Kathy Langer (playing her first singles in two years!) in the other semi.
75s: Anne Guerrant continued her fine form to beat Brenda Carter while Toni Novack also won convincingly over Ann Eaton…should be an interesting final…Toni’s guile and drops vs Anne’s brilliant drives and volleys. In doubles, it’s 1 vs 2: Bryson/Bennett vs Carter/Wachob.
55s: Monica Yanagi, a 5-8 seed, from Brazil, is into two finals; she beat Gayle Prejean in straight sets to set up a final against Charlotte Hartscock, the #2 seed who beat Vicki Buholz 1,6. Both doubles semis were fun 3-setters, with the Brazilian pair of yang and Vasconcellos edging Buholz/Lori Robertson and Hartsock/Deanna Vroman edging Rainy Miller/Stina Mosvold.
45s: The top four seeds are into the semis of singles; in doubles the 8 seeded teams are into the quarters (good job to the 45s seeder!) Alina Jidkova who is playing with Julie Thu (top singles/doubles seed) is a former touring pro who played in 30 grand slams during her career according to Julie!
The 35s just began today and the seeds start play tomorrow.
I didn’t have a lot of time for photos, but in the late afternoon there was a nice hors d’oerves party with wings, pretzels, nuts, popcorn and cheese/veggie skewers.
