Today, Wednesday, was a long day on the court. My alarm did not go off, and I overslept but woke up in time to make it to the club to warm up with Susan for our singles quarters. The weather was pleasant at 7:45 am, then there was heavy drizzle, then a cold front came in around 8:30 and the temperatures dropped to the mid-60s. It was overcast and windy so felt cooler.
I played a long match with Erin Boynton, a match which had many twists and turns…I led 5-3, had set points at 5-3 and 5-4, then she went up 6-5, I leveled and she had one or two set points in the tiebreak, which I won 8-6 or maybe 9-7. The set lasted well over an hour. After a set break I won the second set 6-3…there were lots of momentum shifts in that set too but I managed to survive a spate of winners and some fine serving by Erin later in the set.
Susan won 2,3 over Bunnie Jackson and plays Ann Young, who upset #4 seeded Pat Purcell 1,5. Ann you may remember was originally met first round opponent. Shannon Carney, who beat Kim Dean is my semifinal opponent.
In doubles Susan and I beat Dean/Young…it was quite windy but I lobbed well and Susan did everything well. We play Boynton/Anne Frautschi, the #3 seeds in the semis; the other half is Carolyn Lane/Purcell vs Carney/Cindy Abel.
There were several upsets in the 55s; Gail Prejean took out #1 seeded Simone Vasconcellos in 3 sets (but Vasconcellos and Monica Yanagi (Brazil) easily beat Prejean/Heidi Gerger to reach the semis. Prejean plays Yanagi (who beat Shelly Works in 3 sets) in the semis and Vicki Buholz takes on #2 Charlotte Hartsock. Unseeded Stina Mosvold/Rainy Miller beat last year’s winners, Laurie Capra/Terri Thyssen (5) in a close three setter to set up a meeting with #1 seeded Charlotte Hartsock/Deanna Vroman; Yanagi/Vasoncellos play Laurie Robertson/Vicki Buholz.
In the 75s, Anne Guerrant (formerly Mona Schallau), a former WTA player took out #3 Betty Wachob 61 61 and faces Brenda Carter in the semis while Toni Novack plays Ann Eaton. In doubles, the top four seeds reached the semis including last year’s champions Leanne Bryson/Kathy Bennett.
The 85s are out to the semis with the top 2 seeds, Carol Wood and Dorothy Wasser advancing; Wood to play Chris Smith and Wasser to face Kathy Langer. In doubles Wood/Wasser face Herrick/Palmer for the gold.
The 45s also got underway today; The 35s begin tomorrow.
