Houston, March 13

Rain started the day, and play finished under the lights as a result.

The 45s had 2 "matches of the day". The first was Myke Bodisch, first year 45er, and local star and the 9th seed, Margaret Kitchen. Kitchen won the first set 6-0, Myke won the 2nd 6-2, but the third was very even and featured great points. Bodisch has a fabulous backhand and big first serve and Kitchen moved like a cat. Bodish went up 5-3 in the third, but errors crept into her game and Kitchen tied the set at 5 and then at 6 before Bodisch ran away with the tie break 7-1.

The 2nd great match was between 8th seeded Shelly Stillman Scott and Susan Love, both new to the 45s and with somewhat contrasting styles. The match was unfortunately played on Court 39, and was won 64 75 by the serve and volleying Susan Love, a tall lefty. Stillman Scott is a very fast all court player.

In the 55s there were no upsets but Cathy Kestle edged Texan Chris Smith 62 67 76.

In the 65s, Lyn Tietz beat Lurline Fujii in another close match 36 64 64

Louise Owen, still not fully recovered from the bad fall she suffered last June retired with an injury after falling behind Eva Barbiero 3-0 first set. She was able to play doubles and she and Louise Russ won their first match.
