Individual Championships Day 3 (Monday): Into the Quarters

Draws for the ITF Masters Individual World Championships, Turkey (65-90 Divisions)

Livestreaming link can be found HERE (four courts).

Today was my debut at the 2024 ITF Masters World Individual Championships. I had a tough match…the score didn’t reflect it but I did a lot of running and came back from 15-40 on more than one occasion. I won 62 62 against Heike Deda Kolata. Heike lives in Manacor, not far from the Nadal academy and has for 37 years but originally was German. She’s super fit and has good footwork, but I ran well and did not make a lot of errors. I play Dr. Ulrike in the quarters, from Germany…it will be another fun & challenging match.

Susan Wright won 3/2 against a Dutch player, Annelies Simons. Carolyn Lane, playing with Deda Kolata won her doubles easily and Anne Frautschi had the day off.

In other USA action; the women’s 70s singles players, Tina Karwasky (2), Una Davis (8) and Betsy Kuhle (unseeded), all advanced to the quarters, and Betsy upset Caroline Glazmann (5) in two tight, topsy turvy sets.

Two Canadian 70s caused upsets today: Keith Porter, the 2022 World Champion, beat Andrew Rae, the #2 seed in three sets while his doubles partner, Brian Millar took out top-seeded Serge Gressy in straight sets…though they lost their subsequent doubles match.

In the W85s, the 3 & 4 players, Sheila Palmer and Mary Ann Winden upset the #2 and #1 seeds respectively in singles. Carol Wood (4) retired to Irmgard Gerlatzka (illness); Palmer is in the semis of all 3 85s events and Winden is in the singles/doubles semis.

There are lots more results, but please check the draws above.

After singles, and lunch, Susan and I tried to go shopping, but most of the shops were closed or barely open…but I did find a shop to buy some nuts and chocolate! The walk was interesting..we saw lots of green houses and fields of covered plants (those tomatoes and strawberries have to come from somewhere), a farmhouse with a “Turkish dryer” and chickens roaming around, an actual pay phone (two actually), lots of olive trees and oleanders (don’t eat those).

Anne and I scouted our first round opponents, then the ITF had a ceremony for one participant, a Ukrainian, who celebrated his 100th birthday today…he played an exhibition against a 97 year old!

I hit the gym and the woman who seems to be in charge of the gym wanted a photo with us. We were standing in front of a mirror to take this “selfie” (I was looking at the camera instead of the mirror.

I play again at 10am tomorrow and doubles at 1:30. It’s supposed to rain Wednesday, but tomorrow should be nice.
