Into the Doubles Final in Palm Beach Gardens; Singles Semis Set for Thursday in W 65/70; Heat & Match Tiebreaks Continue

Draws are here.

Bunnie Jackson and I played unseeded Dale & Wendy McColskey today, and won in straight sets to reach the 70s doubles final. The McColskeys beat the #4 seeds, Lyn Robinson and Jan Worthington Vick in the round of 16. We play the international team of Pauline Fisher and Sally Van Rensburg (GBR & AUS respectively), who won their second straight match tiebreak against an American pair, this time against Betsy Savitt/Kathy Foulk of Florida 76 26 (10-6). It was a good match and quite close, lots of long points. Bunnie and I play one semi tomorrow in 70 singles and Wendy McColskey/Tina Karwasky play the other.

Below, Jenny Cerff, RSA, Susan Wright and Carolyn Nichols, taking in some matches.

Susan Wright (USA) edged Erin Boynton (CAN) 75 64 to reach the 65s singles semis against Wanda Howes (AUS). Howes beat Dr. Ulrike (GER); Lori Robertson (USA) beat Barbara Novak (GER) 76 64 to advance to her first world championship semi; Chris French, GBR, seeded second, had to battle hard to beat Marcela Voyame (AUS) 76 62. She’ll have a completely different style of play to contend with tomorrow! No 65 doubles was played today but the semis are Ros Balodis/Leanne Swaysland, AUS, #1 vs Boynton, CAN/Anne Frautschi, #3 and Gillian Brook, GBR/Wanda Howes, AUS vs Pat Medrado, BRA/Wright (2).

In women’s 60s quarters, Jenny Klitch (Palm Beach Gardens) beat Gabby Vilar Pereira of Spain 62 60; Simone Vasconcellos avenged her loss to Jenny Rens (La Jolla) (they played in the USA national Clay courts in March) 62 62 and Lisa Prechtel (NED) beat Motoko Sumi of Japan 61 63. Vicki Buholz (Dallas) and Stina Mosvold (playing for Sweden, but living in Houston) are in a heat delay with Buholz leading a set and 4-4. Update: Mosvold won the 2nd set and subsequent match tiebreak.

The quarters are set. in the Men’s 60s: Howard Herr (14) vs David Defehr (18); Simon Arms, AUS (3) vs Marcelo Ingaramo (6); Olive Lorin (15) vs Clive Wilson (4); Carlos Costa Boy (7) vs Andy Brothers, HGK(2). Herr took out top seeded Pablo Semprun in a match tiebreak; the remaining matches were straightforward two-set matches.

The doubles quarters have yet to be played due to a stoppage of play because of heat. Same with two of the mixed quarterfinals.

Quarters are set in the Men’s 65s: Glenn Busby, AUS (1) vs Mark Vines (5); Eddie Myers, AUS (9) vs Alain Coffe, FRA (10); Bruce Ferguson, AUS (8) vs Bill Moss (4); and Alec Allen, GBR (7) vs Javier Molina Ramos, ESP (2)

The 65 mixed quarters were played today and the semis are set: Ros Balodis/Peter Hampton, AUS #1 vs Gillian Brook/John Lloyd (yes, that John Lloyd), #4 GBR and Sylvie Primault, FRA/Daniel Mueller, SUI vs Anne Frautschi/Chuck Kuhle.

In M65 the doubles are Ross Hessler/Jon Tyrell, a very good but unseeded American pair vs Kuhle/Vines (4), Eric Friedman/Stewart Jackson (Bunnie’s husband), 8 vs Aussie Mike Ford/Peter Hampton (2). Hessler/Tyrell took out top seeded Busby/Eddie Myers 57 63 10-6 earlier today. Friedman/Jackson beat the #3 seeds, Carbo/Molino Ramos 4,4, good match; Vines/Kuhle cruised and Ford/Hampton edged the Alex’s, Behar and Pier 4,5.

In men’s 70s, the quarters will be Marc Renault, FRA (defending champion and top seed) vs Paul French (who took out Michael Beautyman, who was trailing Andrew Rae a set but leading 65 when Rae suffered some heart palpitations…but Rae played doubles today and was ok, though he had to default mixed yesterday). Frits Raijmakers, NED (3) vs Brian Millar, CAN (9); Steve Dance, AUS (6) vs Keith Richardson (took out the #4 seed a couple of rounds ago) and Wayne Pascoe, AUS (7) vs Danny Waldman, who finally played his first singles match of the competition.

Men’s 70 doubles semis are set: Dance/Pascoe (1) vs Jasper Cooper, GBR/Keith Porter, CAN #4 and Robert Graham/Richardson (8) vs Richard Meyer/Waldman (2), in an all American contest.

The mixed 70s semis are also set:

Betsy Savitt/Thomas Jaklitsch (unseeded Americans who took out the top seeds first round) vs Aussie #3 seeds, Sally Van Rensburg/Steve Dance and an all-American semifinal between Andrea barnes/Richard Meyer (4) vs Bunnie Jackson/John Embree.
