Into the Singles Final at ITF Masters Tennis World Championships; Day 6 Roundup from Palm Beach Gardens

Draws are here.

Today I played the 70 singles semifinal against Bunnie Jackson, my doubles partner here. She beat the #4 seed from GBR in the quarterfinals and I won today 63 62 in about two hours…we had long points and the last game was long…maybe 6-8 deuces (and she hit a net cord on one of my match points…and a good lob when I got to the ball). I will face Tina Karwasky of USA in the final. She edged Wendy McColskey 36 76(8) 11-9 and held off at least one match point, at 9-8 in the match tiebreak (Tina hit a winner and on her match point, hit both lines). My sources said that Tina led 5-2 in the second set, Wendy led 6-5 and then 6-3 and 7-5 in the match tiebreak before Tina made her move, playing bold, accurate tennis.

In Women’s 65s, Chris French, GBR beat Lori Robertson, USA 62 63 (or something like that) and Susan Wright, USA beat Wanda Howes, AUS 63 76 (1), rallying from 0-3 in the second set to win it. Wright and Pat Medrado, BRA beat Howes/Gillian Brook, GBR 62 64 to reach the final against Ros Balodis/Leanne Swaysland of Australia (the girls in pink) who took out Anne Frautschi, USA/Erin Boynton, CAN.

In Women’s 60s, Simone Vasconcellos, BRA beat Jenny Klitch, USA in a battle 75 75, and Lisa Prechtel, NED won a topsy turvy match against Stina Mosvold, SWE (but a Houston resident) 16 61 10-7. In doubles Christina Kaus, USA/Mosvold beat Jenny Klitch/Gayle Prejean 60 64 to reach the final against Americans Susan Love/Michelle DePalmer Williams, who won by default over top seeded Jenny Rens/Vicki Buholz (Rens had a family emergency).

In men’s 70s, Danny Waldman (2); Steve Dance AUS won their singles; Dance/Wayne Pascoe AUS are in the doubles final too having beaten Jasper Cooper/Keith Porter.

In Men’s 65s, Glen Busby edged Mark Vines in a match tiebreak to reach the semis. Bill Moss, USA advanced to the semis.

I don’t have the results of the remaining men’s matches yet. Pleas check the draws later once results are posted.

In the 65 doubles semis, Vines/Chuck Kuhle, USA had a tremendous comeback against fellow Americans (and victors over Busby in the previous round), Ross Hessler/Jon Tyrell; Hessler/Tyrell won the first set; Vines/Kuhle were tied at 6 games apiece but down 6-3 in the tiebreak, but managed to win that set and won the ensuing match tiebreak 10-7 when unfortunately one of their opponents double faulted. I watched a bit of that match…tremendous points. They play Peter Hampton/Michael Ford, the #2 seeds from Australia, in the final.

Carolyn, Vicki Buholz and Mark Vines below.

In men’s 60s singles, the #2 and #3 seeds lost; Simon Arms, AUS fell to Marcelo Ingaramo, ARG 1,2 while #2 seeded Andy Brothers (HKG) fell to Spain’s Carlos Costa Bou 1,4. Howard Herr, RSA (14) beat David Defehr (CAN), 18, 63 61.

In Men’s 60 doubles quarterfinal matches, John Bruce/Tim Fraser AUS beat Clive/Peter Wilson in a match tiebreak. Ingaramo/Raul Villanova ARG beat Frans Grimbergen, NED/Scott Works USA 14-12 in a match tiebreak.
