Into the Finals in Villach on a (Mostly) Sunny Day

Draws are here.

Today was a mild, sunny day in Villach. I played both singles and doubles and warmed up at 8am with Aylin from Turkey (great warmup), then played Yvette De Roche from Switzerland. After lunch Shirley Friedl and I played Inge Pils-Feichter and Renate Haubner, both of whom I played last week in Feld am See, but they were playing with different partners as am I. My singles was pretty quick and I played well. I play Ingrid in singles tomorrow…she beat Sylvia Reigl today in straight sets. We won the doubles 64 75. Our opponents were two points away from winning the second set at 5-4 30-0 but we rebounded to win the last 3 games (and the last 3 games of the first set too). It was a two hour match! Lots of lobs and drop shots.

Below is a photo of me and Aylin…I forgot to get one with Yvette. Aylin went to Cornell in NY State.

Tomorrow I play Inge in singles, then play Sylvia Singer (can’t get through a draw in Austria without playing at least one Sylvia), and Elfie Loescher (also played her last week…with Haubner).

The weather should be fine tomorrow.

  1. So inspired by your tennis journey, quick question what do you do to stay in shape and injury free? You must have great workout, stretching routines. I am only 53 but been struggling with injuries past few years but slowing changing my habits to become healthier and loose weight. My goal is to do what you do travel and play tennis as much as I can when I retire in a few years. Good luck

    • I have had some injuries, but as I get older know more about how to prevent/treat them. I do shoulder exercises almost daily plus some other small hip and leg exercises and stretch about 20 minutes a day. For me that works pretty well. I also do a fair amount of walking, and on court running, biking from time to time and more weights from time to time when I am home. Some of it’s lucky…I also play almost exclusively on clay though I do practice on hard courts some…especially doubles. Pick one thing to add to your routine, make it a habit, then add another maybe stretching at the end of the day for 10-20 minutes or biking for 20 minutes a day for a few months. Good luck, get ready for your retirement.
