ITF Masters World Team Championships 50/55/60, Mexico City: USA Goes 5 for 5; Five Teams Reach Medal Rounds

Women’s 50 (Bueno): USA beat Portugal 3/0 to reach the quarterfinals of the Maria Bueno Cup. They play Peru in the quarters. Isabela Iantosca won a tough three setter at #2 (rallying from an 0-6 second set defeat to win 64 in the third); Amanda Parson-Siegel won in straights at #1 64 63 and Julie Silveira/Heather Waters won the doubles point.

Men’s 50 (Perry): USA beat Mexico 3/0; Neel Grover won in straight sets 2/5 at #2 and Willie Dann won 3,1 at #1 singles; Grover/Art Hernandez won 10-3 in the match tiebreak to finish the tie. USA finished second in their round robin group (barely losing to the group winner GBR in a match tiebreak in doubles) so will play for fifth place now, starting with France on Thursday.

Women’s 55 (Connolly): USA blitzed Ireland, not allowing them even a game in three matches. Julie Cass #2 singles; Debbie Nasim #1 singles and Judy Newman/Ros Nideffer (doubles) were flawless today, earning a day off before they play the semis on Thursday.

Men’s 55 (Austria): USA had the day off today and plays the quarters tomorrow vs Canada

Women’s 60 (Marble): USA lost 2/1 to France, but won the mathematics problem to advance to the semis against Italy. Three of the four teams in their group went 2/1: All beat Portugal 3/0; USA beat Argentina 3/0 but lost 2/1 to France (10-8 in the match tiebreak of doubles); France beat USA but lost 2/1 to Argentina. However, USA was comfortable ahead in sets and games percentages, having won 2 more sets and 13 more games than France. France edged Argentina by winning one more set than the Argentines. Fran Chandler won at #2; Vicki Buholz lost at #1 and Buholz/Gayle Prejean narrowly lost the doubles. They finished quite late as they had a 1pm start. Fortunately they have a day off tomorrow.

Men’s 60 (Von Cramm): USA beat Canada 3/0; Peter Smith won at #2 decisively; Tom Coulton won the first set 76 and it was 1/1 in the 2nd (Tom broke himself by double faulting at ad-out) when his opponent started cramping and could not continue; Polo Cowan/Peter Smith won the doubles. They have a day off tomorrow.
