Powless, McCabe, King, Fales, Karwasky, Ginnard, Van Nostrand, Lutz and Price Vie for Singles Titles in Austria

Several Americans are still in the hunt for the prestigious title of ITF World Individual Singles Champion in Austria tomorrow and some players have already won world doubles or mixed doubles titles.

In Villach, where the 75-85 divisions are playing, Americans are doing very well in all categories.

In the men’s 75s, King Van Nostrand ousted last year’s champion, Frank Czech (yes, from Czech Rep) and will play for his 10th individual singles title tomorrow. He’s in the doubles final as well, with Australia’s Peter Froehlich.

Roz King will play for her first ever world individual singles title tomorrow against Elisabeth Von Boemmel, whom she beat in the European Open Super Seniors in June (but to whom she fell in the team event, last week). She’s primed for the rematch! She’s also in the doubles final, with Ria Graham, while her Queens Cup teammate Lyn Tietz teamed with American Nick Ourusoff to reach the mixed final with a default win over the #2 seeds from Germany.

John Powless and George McCabe have reached the 80s singles final where they face each other tomorrow. Later in the day they will face each other again, this time in the doubles final. Powless/Richard Doss will play McCabe/Chuck Nelson.

In the 80 women’s division, Margaret Canby/Margaret Robinson (AUS) are in the doubles final. Canby is also in the consolation singles final.

Jane Lutz, who was a Doris Hart Cup team member, played in the 85s in the individuals and has reached the singles and doubles final (with Rita Price). She plays Price in the final. Price won the mixed, with pickup partner Darias Panah-Izadi from Gr. Britain.

Clem Hopp was a men’s 85 doubles finalist and a singles semifinalist; he fell ill and had to default the doubles final and singles semi, both to Doug Corbett (AUS).

Over in Poertschach, Donna Fales was a mixed finalist with Fred Drilling and is in the singles final (against Michelle Bichon) and a doubles finalist (with Cathie Anderson), all in the women’s 70s. Jimmy Parker is in the doubles final.

Hugh Thomson is in the 65 mixed final (with Brenda Carter) and men’s doubles final (with Jerry Thomas). Hugh and Jerry will face fellow Americans Richard Johnson and Les Buck in the final. Carter is in the women’s doubles final with Betty Wachob.

In Klagenfurt, Mary Ginnard is a match away from her first ever singles final; she will have to get past Nora Blom from the Netherlands to reach it; while her doubles partner Tina Karwasky faces Kerry Ballard (AUS) in the other semi. Karwasky/Ginnard are in the double final too.
