La Jolla Monday: 50-90 Women’s Hard Courts

The 50-90 Hard Courts began today at the venerable La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. I hit with Anna Zimmermann who is the 4th seed in the 50s, early, then watched my first round opponent play her first round; I needn’t have rushed, the match took about four hours and featured many comebacks by Ginny Benneke, the eventual winner (over Crys Ren), in a battle of San Diego players. Ginny won 57 (and was down 52 in that set), 64 (Ginny was down 3/0 and one game in that set lasted about 20 minutes according to onlookers) and 75 (I think Ginny was down 52 in the third. Crys was cramping after the first two sets but kept fighting. However, Ginny Benneke looks like an advertisement for fitness and how tennis keeps one looking youthful; she probably went for a run after the match!

All the seeds were in action in the 70s and all won but Sherry Ploor took a set off of Carolann Castell before falling in three.

I caught up with Lorna Brooks, Joan Avedian and Jean Ainger from the Fresno/Visalia area (Lorna has since moved Wyoming) and got their photo:

Gail Muryama played doubles with her aunt Roz King, who is 79 this year…they played in the 60s on court one and Roz made her share of good shots which the audience appreciated.

I play tomorrow singles and then doubles (against Joan and Lorna). Let the fun begin!
