USA Advances in Men’s 65; Five USA Teams Remain in Medal Contention in Umag

65s: The USA Britannia Cup team beat Sweden 3/0 to advance to the semifinals on Friday in Umag. Their match tomorrow will be live streamed. Here is the live stream link:  The USA Kitty Godfree Cup team fell 3/0 to Australia. (More on Sue Bramlette’s blog once I post it.)

70s: The USA Althea Gibson Cup team fell 2/1 to France, dropping both singles before winning the doubles point. France won this event last year so it was a tough back draw. Betty Wachob lost to Sylvie Galfard and Brenda lost to world champion Gail Benedetti. The men’s Crawford Cup team had a bye today.

75s: The Betsy Grant Cup team fell 2/1 to Great Britain. They started well, with Ivo Barbic beating former British great Roger Taylor but Joe Bachmann lost at #1 singles and Rudy Hernando/Frank Hagelshaw lost the doubles point. They play for 5th next. The Queens Cup team had a day off Thursday. 

80s: Both the USA Mulloy and Hart Cup teams had a rest day today and play the semis tomorrow. 

Summary: USA plays semis of Men’s 65, Women’s 75, Women’s & Men’s 80s on Friday; Plays for bronze next in Women’s 65; Plays for 7th in Women’s 70; Plays for 5th, Men’s 75; plays for 7th-10 in Men’s 70.
